I always loved to watch David Enderby's Karmann-Ghia. My first car was a K-Ghia, aged 19.....

My Lola T492 did the WW Championship with a body from Dr E's Ghia moulds.
Was painted pink with a fat black rear wing. Sadly that body was crushed and the owner before me took it to the tip! The car had a new T492 body on the car when I bought it in 2008. I still have the car, love it to death, and is working well on the Midlamd hill climbs winning my class regularly. Love the heritage of this car. I think Alan Humberstone only ran it once with this body in place and a hot 500bhp engine. I have some great pictures of the car being built with this body and in action too. The car must be the least documented car from that series. |

It was an interesting series back in the day and a couple of mates ran Imp specials, I wonder if any of those still exists ?

Great video's and pictures bringing back many happy memories of Special Saloon races in the seventies and eighties . I recognised most of the cars and drivers but who was driving the leading Mark 3 Escort in the second video ? Would it have been Nick Oatway ?
As much as I enjoy the CSCC's Special Saloon series I always think it's a shame that smaller engined cars are few and far between given that in the seventies the Wendy Wool series entries were often divided into two races with a split at 1000 cc . I wonder if a Maxi 1300 style series would bring the smaller cars out ? |

Oatway would be my guess too. He ran one of those from '82 til '85. Can't remember if it was sold on or rebodied?

According to Rod Birley's website he had acquired the Oatway Escort by 1984 therefore would be the driver in the second video . Wasn't the Oatway Escort based on a Gartrac Rallycross car , albeit powered by a Ford GAA engine .

So if it was a Gartrac shell was that the same as the Schanche and Welch rallyx cars, albeit with different engines? |

Just checked on the CSCC Special Saloons website and a lot of the old Donington GT cars are listed including the Oatway Escort which is described as a ' Gartrac Ford Escort Mk3 ' powered by a Ford GAA engine . I think Nick Oatway came into circuit racing from Rallycross which could be the connection with Gartrac . For the 1985 season Rod Birley put the GAA engine into a Sierra which he used in Thundersaloons for a couple of seasons . Coincidentally following Birley in the second video is Terry Nicholls in his Gartrac built and GAA engined Capri . In 1987 Nicholls and Birley combined their resources to create a Porsche 962 engined Sierra ( built by Gartrac ? ) which wasn't very successful but went on to form the basis of Rob Cox's Pontiac engined ' Black Thunder ' Sierra in Thundersaloons . Oatway went on to race the ' Stars and Stripes ' Pontiac engined Opel Manta .

That's good news , I look forward to seeing both those cars one day . From memory the quickest smaller class cars were a match for all but the quickest unlimited Special Saloons . I wonder how the ex Geoff Wood Lowline Escort is progressing ?

Great news if both those legendary 'tiddlers' return soon!
Terry Nicholls Capri was a bit like a mk3 shelled version of the earlier Cologne mk1 cars. It was an ex G1 shell much modified. Made a tremendous racket!!!! |

A couple of years ago I had a chat with Terry Nicholls about his old Capri and apparently he sold the engine and shell separately . Sadly probably the fate of a lot of those old cars .
Watching the Brands Hatch video it was fascinating to see Birley's Escort rounding Druids while the Mini's at the back of the pack were still at Paddock ! No Bop back then ! |

I'm asking this question since the subject has arisen...
I have only found one reference to my Lola when Humberstone added the Karman Ghia body (a la Dr Enderby) and raced it at Brands hatch in the 80's. Some time (years) ago in my long long thread on the car, I was sent this copy of an un dated, or rather I can't read the date, Autosport page showing the car in action. Has anyone any other info/pics of this 'rare' event? anthropologist salary in south africa |

I'm pretty certain that it's the 12th December 1991 as top right there is a piece on the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Formula Ford racing which would be 1992 . As that is in the coming season that means it must be 1991 ( if you're following me ! ) and one of the late season clubbies held at Brands , on the 8th December 1991 .

I thought that too. Definitely not '84 as the piece mentions the shunt of the Skoda in '85.

I was hoping the articles on the page in general would fix the date, Dec 1991, thanks to those with good eyesight!
The car in that form was dragged around for some time in and around Essex and I bought it in 2008. The body was taken to the tip by the previous owner about a year before, 2007. It is this time zone I have few facts about the car's where-abouts, hence the question. Anyone with any thoughts on the car's activities after this Brands race? |
