Theunser should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Jacques Villeneuve was rumoured to take the Sauber seat in the last few races of the season in 1995 to gain experience.

Franchitti was considered for the second Jaguar seat alongside Irvine in 2001. And de Ferran was linked to a Ligier seat in 95. Also Paul Tracy came close to a Benetton seat in the mid 90s

Jonathan Palmer to partner Prost at Mclaren in 1987.
Eventually they choose Johansson, who had a great season at Ferrari.
But I would have watched what Palmer could do in a Mclaren

Palmer was actually briefly on the 1990 entry list for McLaren, until McLaren made Senna apologise to the FIA

David Brabham agreed to replace Olivier Grouillard at Tyrrell in the 1992 Australian Grand Prix. But Elf, what was sponsoring Tyrrell didn't want the deal.

Eric van de Poele also was in contention for the seat in 1993. But they opted to sign Katayama instead to get Yamaha engines for free.

That was that Japanese driver, Akira something I think, who was going to drive for Brabham in 1992, but was refused a superlicence, so they gave the drive to Miss Amati

Also Pedro Chaves was in line for a March drive for 1992, but missed out I think due to funding

When Larini was fired by Sauber midway through 97, they asked Brundle to take his place, but Martin turned it down, as he didn’t think the car was competitive enough

Riccardo Patrese was talking with Ligier,Sauber and Mclaren for a seat in 1994. Also, he was about to join Williams in 1995, but Senna's accident changed his mind.

When Mclaren was with Peugeot engines, the french company wanted their drivers to get a seat. Namingly Yannick Dalmas or Philippe Alliot.

Blundell agreed to race for Sauber in 1996.
A year before he was close to Simtek.

Johnny Herbert has been linked to many teams after his second Benetton stint. Jordan, Ligier, Tyrrell and even Mclaren (and CART) was a possibility. He ended up at Sauber.

Actually Patrese was going to replace Senna with immediate effect after Ayrton’s death, but then decided against it

And Prost was also linked to a McLaren seat for 94, although the fact he was still technically under contract with Williams counted against that happening

Well we know what the Doctor's limit was, as showed when Alesi turned up in a Tyrrell and blew him away first race!

Indeed, Palmer ever the realist saw that and retired at the end of the season.

Williams were interested in Caffi for 1989.
Also he could have raced at Benetton in 1990 if Piquet decided to retire at the end of 1989.

Also Patrese would have raced at Scuderia Italia if Williams signs Alboreto for '89.

Yes, Alboreto was quite close to partnering Boutsen at Williams for 89, but at the last minute Williams turned him down. Apparently Alboreto’s personal Marlboro sponsorship had something to do with it, as Williams were sponsored by Barclay. The same reason Michele walked out of Tyrrell in 89, when they signed Camel. Ironically Michele lost his Marlboro sponsorship not long after and went to drive for the Camel sponsored Larrousse Lola team

Speaking of which, Perry McCarthy reveals in his book he had discussions with Ken Tyrrell about standing for Alboreto’s replacement Alesi when his F3000 commitment’s clashed with F1. In the end Herbert was the stand in at Belgium and Portugal

Jarier couldn't join Ferrari because Max Mosley didn't let it, claiming Jean-Pierre had a contract to March for 1974.
But he raced for Shadow eventually. Why did he let him go in?
Also Jarier tried to get a Ligier seat in 1977.
Also he was linked to Williams for 1982(I think he even tested). That went to Rosberg. Who knows...

It's true Jarier did test for Williams alongside Rosberg prior to the 82. There were a few linked to the Williams for 82. Someone suggested to Frank they should go with Cheever. Frank did try to get Our Nige from Lotus, with Colin refused. They also tried to get Wattie.

Also when Reutemann retired, Rosberg suggested they replace him with Chico Serra

BTW Jarier did do a couple of races with Ligier in 77

Kubica and Raikkonen both had offers from Toyota in 2009. In the end they both declined it. And Toyota pulled out.
I think also Kovalainen was linked.
