It's just traditionally never been held on a friday - don't why it started like that in the first place...

Because the tradition required that on Friday there's the flea market on the streets of Monaco... Lots of tradition here, and actually not even almighty F1-FIA-Bernie can break them.

Support races practice early Friday. F1 used to practice on all 3 days. One session each day.Just a ploy nowdays to fill the hotels for one more day.Thursday is Ascension Day,public holiday in most of europe(not UK)shops used not to be open.Friday practice used to start at 5.30AM and finish before the shops opened!

Flea market - what are millionaires going to buy in a Monaco flea market - the odd Van Gogh painting?
Do you reckon David Dickinson and his fake tan (he'll fit in well) will be there with the fantastic Bargain Hunt? Last edited by Hugh Jarce; 29 May 2003 at 18:00. |

yes, saturday.
thursday practice is because the monaco authorities don't want the roads closed for three days running, or something like that. |

Friday is Assencion day and is therefore a religious holiday.
Not sure it always falls like this though. |

Actually, Peter, it was myunderstanding that Monaco is always on Ascension Weekend. Given that the date of Easter is tied to the Lunar Calendar, The date of Ascension day can vary quite a bit from year to year.
I would guess that the Date for Monaco each season drives the arrangement of the entire F1 Calendar as a result. |

Even when I was tied to the Catholic upbringing I had, I never understood the logic in having Easter on different dates each year - surely Jesus' anniversary is always the same?
But yea, it is for religious reasons, based on Monaco customs. The drivers probably don't get much rest though, as they'll be lots of interview duties,as wella s getting the car right for the all-important qualifying |
