Considering how much significance France has in the past, present and future of F1, it would be amazing for them to not have a race, even for just 1 year. Then again, Magny-Cours has produced few exciting races, and I'm not keen on the changed layout near the pits as it's removed a challenging corner and potential overtaking spot. Having Belgium back and Canada saved are more important than this, in my view.

France was the original grand prix and I think it would be very strange if this race didn't take place. In 2006 it will be 100 years of a grand prix, so with that just 3 years off, it should be sorted.

Wasn't there some problems a few years back and the race dropped for a while.

The axing of the Magny-Cours race looks suspiciously to me like a plot from a certain Mr Bernard Ecclestone. Guess what I'm thinking?

Hint: Paul Ricard

More on this.

More here, speculating that Le Mans could be a future GP venue and add another prestigous venue to the calendar.

Sorry, I wasn't aware about the spectator and access problems that Paul Ricard faces that were pointed out in that article.

The reason I would prefer the race to go to Paul Ricard instead of Le Mans is that Ricard is a much faster/more flowing/more exciting/better circuit than the Bugatti. Bugatti would just be like the Hungaroring - mickey-mouse and impossible to pass at, and not pleasurable for either drivers or fans.

Of course that would all change if the race was held on the full Sarthe circuit... Why the FIA have such a problem with F1 running on longer circuits I don't know, but I sure wish they would change their philosophy on them, and soon...

Both have their plus sides: Ricard has Ecclestone's blessing and is one of the most modern tracks in the world; Le Mans has the history and the name.

There's no doubt that there needs to be a French GP on the calender, but any replacement for Magny-Cours should be thought about carefully.

Here's the three track maps, so you can make up your own mind:

Paul Ricard

Le Mans Bugatti

Le Mans Sarthe

BTW, sorry about the Paul Ricard image being cut in half, don't know why that's happening.

Tell Bernie to tear up that nauseating multi-colored asphalt around his track and build a few grandstands before he does anything. Have the decency to make Paul Ricard look like a proper Formula 1 venue before he moves the race there. Keep the race in Magny-Cours or move it to Le Mans for a year, then unveil Paul Ricard in '05.
