Rear engine Porsche gearbox converted for front engine car?
Has anyone ever seen a rear engine Porsche gearbox converted to fit behind a conventional front mounted engine?
Bits of an old thunder saloon type race car have showed up with this most unusual setup, I'm trying to figure out what it might be. Side drive flange mounts are blanked and an extension bolted to the back of the gearbox with oitput shaft. The car also had an old alloy Atlas axle like homologated for the Capri RS3100 with the bolt assembly flanges. |

Are you sure that is a Porsche gearbox casing that bolts onto the engine end?

I've been around Porsche classics for 27 years and don't recognise that case from any road car, but could be a competition case.
I'm sure Francis will know, or Mike Bainbridge at MB Engineering. |

In the 2nd photo the maincase on the bench and upwards and the bearing carrier are Hewland with some sort of horrible mess then attached to that.
DG300 or FT200 would be first suspects with crude blanking plates to close off where the sideplates and axles used to exist. |

Could be some kind of four wheel drive conversion of a Hewland?
Didn't Xtrac supply a lot of 4WD systems for Rallycross at one time? The mismatch between the maincase and bearing carrier look like Hewland FG. Did Porsche continue to use the VW front mounting flange design on their own gearboxes? In which case a Hewland mounting would be the same as Porsche. |
