I think Rodney is busy running a business that Bob owns called the Bob Jane T-Marts, running Calder as well would be far too big of work load for him.

I'm led to believe a new Motorsport Manager has been recently appointed at Calder Park.

Extensive motorsport experience both here & in the UK too I'm told.

Russell Boyd would be the gentleman in question. He's only just been appointed so took a back seat over the weekend getting to know the place & those of us who appear on circuit racing weekends.

I believe he had a hand in EBC brakes until recently as well as being a competitor in Hillclimbs here & various other events in NZ & the UK.

I introduced him to everyone at the officials briefing on Sunday morning but the good Uncle must've been at the canteen for his morning egg & bacon roll

HMMM,

Possibly doing laps of the track at the time, so as the TV camera's could 'sight-in' on the corners etc.....

Or scoffing an egg & bacon roll might have been closer to the mark:

Was there an officials briefing on any day last weekend ? Gee; lucky they didn't wait for me ......

Very interesting indeed.

While Nextel would be interesting, I find it unlikely....only time will tell. Time to go looking through some of the NASCAR sites for some nibbles

It is like a clap of Thunder!!
Best news since the door was closed on the OUT HOUSE.
Great news - done more than being a competitor.
Great to hear months of hard work by some have come to fruition - onward & upward at Calder.

Can anyone fille me in on the deleted part of this thread? I guess it has something to do with NASCAR coming to the Dome.

brad jones was sponsored by Castrol for a few seasons...with engines by Benson (who is/was building nextel engines now)

steven richards ran for garry rogers in a falcon
jim richards was nascar champion
wayne gardener finished 3rd (i think) in one race.
nathan pretty, matthew white (i think he was sponsored by Jayco caravans) ran in sportsman and auscar
max dumesney was champion (a couple of times, IIRC)
allan grice had the first proper crash... and Dick Trickle had the best name of any racing driver, ever!

and if there is any better motorsport than 40 HQ holdens around the 'dome then I am yet to see it.

Sometimes they didn't make it all the way to the finish either. (Pics from Calder's web site)

I was one of the many volunteer marshals that worked at the 'Dome and will definately be at the head of the queue if they reopen the complex for a return to full blown super speedway racing.

I have the 1987? NASCAR 500 from Calder Park in .AVI format somewhere around here...

It's from a video tape and poor quality, but geez it's great to rehash once every so often.

I reckon they should put the Dozer rippers in and turn it into a speedway track. The place would be busy every weekend.

I remember talking to some of the legend of Grand nationals saying that the race they done there was boring because the cars stuck like glue to the track it was a matter of hold it flat and steer one handed waving to the guy beside you.

As would I!

If Nascar Nextel Cup came to the Thunderdome, I'd come over to see it, however I very much doubt that would happen anytime soon, they still don't race Cup outside of the USA, only the Busch series goes to Canada and Mexico, apart from those Japan exhibition races...

no way... very bumpy into the corners, takes a great deal of finesse to go 'round there fast.

NASCAR at the dome, bring it back on!!

One of my crew on my NASCAR ran in that GN demo, was the fastest and then hit the wall. They wern't invited back not because they were faster than NASCAR, the concern was that the next GN car to hit the wall, don't bother looking for the bits or the driver, just paint the wall and next race.

I did nearly 200 laps of the dome today in NASCAR, the Fastrack Monaro's (what a shame they didn't take off) and road cars doing spectator rides! It is still the greatest thrill behind the wheel of a car (even at the reduced pace for safety of your passenger.)

V8 Supercars at the dome - I don't think there is a fit!

The new (Saudi) plan, there's a fit!

Good to see the 'Dome still gets some use at least...

I have to type this or my brain will explode!

Hey Camaroz! Good to hear from you again. How's the Brock Commodore going?

Thanks for reading, you've been a wonderful audience. Don't forget to try the veal and tip your waitress. We now return you to the topic

Makes a better race track but.

Sorry for the mis-quote on "Saudi" - should have been "Middle East"

Page 13 of AA 1231 (March 14 - 20) has an article on the "SPEEDCAR" Series being developed by 'Beniot Lamonerie' based on "identical NASCAR machines" and Australia is a target market.

Alesi, Herbert and Johansson have tested the cars and all is positive.

That said, if VESCA get wind of it, the claws will be out!!

I should start a thread on "Speedcars" and get Lamonerie up to speed on the way to do it out here!
