RBS, dont yo think the Gordini looked somewhat outdated compared with its competitors. Lack of money, already.

Gordini's always seemed to lack performance, they always looked heavey compared to their rivals. The type 32 looked great but was just to heavy.

Gordinis were not too shabby on power RB, but lacked the handling of Ferrari, and was very much a shoestring operation. In 1952 when the French Grand Prix was run at Rouen, a race was held at Reims a very fast circuit where power mattered most;

1 4 Jean Behra Gordini T16 '16-0031' 71 laps, 169.52 kph
2 12 Giuseppe Farina Ferrari 500 '4' 70 laps
3 10 Alberto Ascari/Luigi Villoresi Ferrari 500 '5' 70 laps
4 6 "B.Bira" Gordini T16 '16-0033' 69 laps
5 38 Louis Rosier Ferrari 500 '186-F2' 65 laps
6 44 Johnny Claes Simca-Gordini T15 '0015-GC' 64 laps
7 42 Mike Hawthorn Cooper-Bristol T20 'CB-1-52' 64 laps
8 20 Yves Giraud-Cabantous HWM-Alta '3-52' 64 laps
NC 22 Emmanuel de Graffenried Platé-Maserati 4CLT/48 '1601' 61 laps
NC 26 Stirling Moss HWM-Alta '5-51-52' 60 laps
NC 34 Eric Brandon/Alan Brown Cooper-Bristol T20 'CB-3-52' 58 laps

Fastest Lap: Alberto Ascari (Ferrari 500), 2:28.2, 174.42 kph

Underpowered? I think not!

I must admit this thread has made me much more aware and appreciative of the wonderful machines from before my days of attending races. I see them at modern Historic Races but usually am too busy looking at my era stuff to watch them closely. That will change this year at PI in March.

Thanks again Bob
Love the old pic of Hawthorn in the BRM.

Maserati's are always good to look at. 8CM is a classic and easily distinctive

Talking of Maserati's I remember back in 1954 Ascari and Villoresi had signed for the new Lancia team, however, the cars were not ready to race until late in the year, meanwhile the pair were driving for Maserati. At that time the Maser's were no match for Ferrari of Mercedes and at the British Grand Prix Ascari, who did not like being second, drove his 250F flat out trying to keep up with the opposition. Not surprisingly his engine cried enough and he coasted in to the pits to retire, where upon the team signalled Villoresi to come in and Antonio took over the second 250F, being team leader (of course). Very soon he coasted back into the pits with another blown engine asking the team;
"Any more Maseratis".

Come on Griffin ID these for us.

Is number 4 Roddy McPhearson in his Cooper-Bristol? (He always used to be a highlight for me in Historic races in the late 70's early 80's. I was told that his driving style and dress mimicked the original driver of the car back in the day, Ken Wharton i think?).
