Training
Having read the proposed training schedules being touted around, it doesn't look like there are any I/O training sessions being organised. Have I missed something?

I think it was a printing error Neil. Best to look at the paperwork when it arrives after Christmas.

Again having read the training schedules what are the differences in the training day between Trainees and New Marshals? I know that New Marshals should have completed a few meetings but I'm puzzled.

Some I/Os act as if they are perfect.
Do I/Os need training? |

With regards to trainees and new marshals I would think that trainees are those that have not yet upgraded but have some marshalling experience and new marshals have only recently become marshals and have not yet had any experience.
I thought it was stange that no I/O training has been included. |

In many marshalling roles I have found: 1 Many I/Os are the best trained marshals around. Do they need extra training? We all can benefit from GOOD training and others experience, is my answer. 2 A few I/Os are overconfident with this extra training and can be over officious. I once was almost attacked verbally by one I/O when I approached the post. He was most offended when I first ignored him and introduced myself first to the observer. It was especially irritating when I then asked permission from the observer to report to the I/O. The observer later thanked me and commented that my actions were "beneficial". 3 We can all learn from everyone. Fresh eyes of a novice asking why not do it another way can make us all think again. Sadly a few I/Os refuse to listen to others experience. Yes we all have human failings, (including my humour) but when I am acting as an observer I must admit I always expect a very high standard of marshalling from an I/O. |

The IO that gave you verbal. Did uou activly do anything about it like speak to the chief IO or chief marshal. Or have a chat in private with him.
I agree that all IO's should do some form of training every year as the job we do needs to be on the ball. Also a bit of interaction from observer and IO training would not go a miss as these 2 persons have to work closely on a post. I must admit there are the odd observer I have come across who has not been an incident/ IO grade for a long time could do with going back to the floor to remember what its like.( Details will not be supplied). At the time i dealt with this by having a word with the person in private. Thanks for the answer. |

Of course we all need training! I've never been an IO, unless you count Le Mans, and I "Observe" the actions of the IO & his team on track, and act on his instructions and requests. Even if there are marshals that have been in their grades for years, it can be a real eye-opener to be in a training session and someone comes up with the un-asked question! As I keep hammering home when on post "The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked!" Why are we so anal about status in this country? If the IO is doing his job, he should be one of the first people a visitor to a post meets anyway! A post must work as A TEAM not a group of unofficial teams. Even photographers can be part of the team, Even Slapper Baz!

I agree entirely Stoowert, we can never get enough training and that we ALL work as a TEAM regardless of our grade.

Hi all, been busy (and thus away) for while but nice to see things the same as ever round here
Back on topic, I'm grading for incident (as I went straight from course to flag, but now incident at Combe so thought I might as well go for the upgrade) and one of the training days is meant to be an "Incident Handling Training Day". Now I've looked on the list from the BMMC, and none seem to be identified as this particulaly, so what is an incident handling training day, where can I get one, and how's it different? |

Now, what is an incident handling training day? It covers the basics of incident handling, a talk by one of the rescue unit crew, a look around the rescue unit, a fire talk, etc., then you get to go out & play with old bangers pretending to deal with an incident (all stationary, of course!). That's the theory - in practice we didn't go out to play when I did it at Oulton this year - apparently the rescue unit isn't equipped to deal with hypothermia! |

I was going to put a fire out outside our fire station last week but the firefighters were huddled round it at the time! Strike while the irons hot!

I don't see why starting it excludes getting points for putting it out - otherwise we'd get no points for training day fires!

Getting back to the subject , I got my Oulton training form this morning. There are, at Oulton, two IO training sessions, for those wanting first & second IO training signatures.
The form also explains the difference between new marshals & trainees. The 'New Marshal' training sessions are for people who have never attended a training day & have marshalled at less (sic) than two meetings. The 'Basic Introduction' is for people who have attended more than two race meetings. Hmmm....what if you've done two meetings? |

There is an IO training session at Donington on 26th January 2002. Volunteer in the usual way please (i.e. not by replying to this post ;-)).

Thanks JW but do you know if anyone has got together any kind of Observer or I/O training for the Hillclimbs?
I know that there will be a training day for Hillclimb Marshals in the Midlands but do you have any more info as to the content? Many thx for your comments |

Speed marshal training
To quote from the Hagley and District Light Car Club website:
"In 2003 the club is hosting a Marshals Training Day at Loton Park. It will take place on the 23rd March and will cover all aspects of speed event marshalling and will be of help to all marshals and to those wishing to take up marshalling for the first time. A hot lunch will be provided to all marshals attending. For more infomation please contact Dave Parr on 01902 896699 or email: clubsec@hdlcc.com" (That's near Shrewsbury, for those outside the area.) See www.hdlcc.com/marshals.htm Regards Jim Whitaker Last edited by JimW; 19 Dec 2002 at 09:34. |

Jim,
Just a thought. Will those training days be MSA approved or sanctioned? I'm asking in case anyone needs them as a signature on their licence. |
