Summer Series For Supercars

Speedcafe are reporting that the Supercar gurus are thinking of changing to a summer series running from September to May.

Interesting thought process, Townsville and Darwin will be lovely in mid January, no doubt Perth will a great round in 40 degree heat.

Perhaps they will embark on a European tour via Asia in the Australian winter?

Don't think a lot of people would like to see their favourite driver melting in scorching heat. The only way this could work is if they went back to international rounds when it's winter/early spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

I'll pass on it thanks.

They're not going to outdo the footy codes no matter what they do. Both codes have games throughout the year, for the sake of relevance.

Didn't Channel 7 and Mike Raymond propose this back in the "bad old days", and the idea was thrown out when the "new guard" took over in 1997?

Funny how old ideas are new hip ideas....... makes me want to get out the Future Tourer regs and have a read

Back when touring cars were the support act for open wheelers Motor racing was predominantly a summer sport.
Even before the Tasman series provided a summer competition for Northern Hemisphere stars to visit I recall october long weekend was seen as the season opener for major domestic races with Easter being the end of season.

Some of the biggest, most well attended race meetings have been held in the summer months.

Dont recall that being an issue at the A1 Grand Prix meetings there.

Having worked quite literally across the road from Eastern Creek Raceway for more than 10 years, the stench of the rubbish tip, and the earthworks that were there for a long time before it, can border on rancid

The site owner’s solution is the spray system belting out disinfectant/aromatics along the fence of the site in an attempt to diffuse the aromatics.

It does not work.

By the same token, if you can smell the biscuits being cooked, their external filtration system clearly doesn’t work either... it’s just a more palatable aroma.

The equally pongiest location around there is the fresh food cool store in the IGA complex... the wrong dated watermelons, or bananas in there let’s go a stench strong enough to melt paint....

If it did become a 'summer series', run from September to May as mentioned - then the traditional endurance races of Sandown and Bathurst would presumably then be the first events of the season.

Which would seem a little strange.

Unless they're also planning to shift the dates for those events as well?

Backagain has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Took my three kids to the Winfield triple challenge, have absolutely no recollection of a smell back then, one of the best events we'd been to with the variety of competition, my tiny little 8 year old daughter absolutely loved the Top Fueller dragsters. Having said that, I don't think a summer series would attract much interest, there are too many other things to do in AUS. during the summer months, seems like an attempt to further fill the coffers.

Also attended in '93.

The Winfield Triple Challenge was a one-off event held in January - what is being proposed here is an entire remapping of the Supercars' series calendar, starting from 2020.

Link to article the OP is referring to:
https://www.speedcafe.com/2018/07/11...cept-for-2020/

This will see the season kicking off in September, and ending in May the following year.

The difference will be in the off-season being June/July/August under the new proposal, rather than the current December/January/February period.

Thus there will still be scope to run races in warmer regions in Spring and Autumn, just not in winter.

Is anyone on board with this, or alternatively think it's an unnecessary change?

The fact it has been proposed because of perceived conflict with the AFL/NRL season concerns me - the initial squabbling back in 1997 meant gifting the traditional October long weekend for Bathurst to the NRL, which was bad enough.

Its the belief that the series should or needs to compete with NRL, AFL and Cricket.

Rugby League were moving to the long weekend night Grand Final concept even if the V8s had never left the long weekend.

Debatable.

The fact is the squabbling between Channel 7 and their Supertourers, and the emerging V8 series, left the October long weekend available and for the taking.

The NRL seized upon the opportunity and never looked back.

Several decades of Bathurst tradition promptly went down the drain.

The emerging V8 series?

NSWRL had been debating the merits of a night grand final since the late 80s, it was inevitable. When Super League was first launched in 1995, a night Grand Final was central to their plans. The Sunday night leading into the holiday Monday was always the date mentioned should the shift to a NSWRL night Grand Final game happen

Plans for the Sunday night Grand Final on the Labour Day Sunday night were first hatched when the NRL was formed in late-1997, the 2001 starting point for it was picked because the 2000 season would have to be finished in August due to the Olympics, so it provided a perfect zone to move.

A car race was never going to change the NRL's plans, nor was the Grand Final really going to affect what Bathurst was doing.

The success of the V8 Bathurst on different weekends away from long weekend showed that the fans couldn't have cared less about "Several decades of Bathurst tradition"
