1600 Kent FlyWheel Bolts?

Can these be reused, or are they one torque wonders?

No they are not stretch bolts, I've re-used them loads of times and never had a problem, but I do Loctite them.

kartingdad has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
You can get some better ones with a higher strength, I think from Burton.

Fixings are free so they are ok to use.

According to the most recent regs I have (2006) fixings used for moving engine parts in general are not free

"g) The use of non-standard replacement
fasteners, nuts, bolts, screws, studs and
washers which are not connected with, or which
do not support, any moving parts of the engine
or its compulsorily retained accessories is
permitted.

However flywheel bolts are free:

"b) Flywheel bolts are free and locating dowels are permitted."

If anyone's got a more recent copy of the regs, including the most recent one which is reputed to allow a steel crank, but which I've never seen, then please let me know!

Burton sell high tensile ARP flywheel bolts

Pegasus racing have the ARP bolts dirt cheap! I'll probably order a set for next time...

Historic FF allow ARP big ends bolts. Don't suppose anyone is going to argue about flywheel ones.

Flywheel bolts are cheap, I change them every time the engine gets rebuilt.

Interstingly I went through a phase where they kept breaking in short time frame (6 sessions) and spoke to the engine builder about using stronger bolts and was advised against it. The basis being that they broke before something else major did.

After 3 sets I figured out what the problem was

Personally I have never had any bolts break either with a steel or alloy flywheel.
This is with almost 50 years of building and racing the Kent engine, some with power outputs in excess of 180hp.
However this is only in saloon cars and not single seaters.
I understand that the main cause of flywheel and crank breakage is caused by the shock of hitting the track with the bell housing if it bottoms out.

Since my last reply, I ordered, received and installed a set of ARP bolts... I was originally going to replace the standard ones, but my local ford dealer was going to make that difficult for some reason. I have fancy bolts now and my mind is at ease!

I hope the other Aussie poster eventually replies and provides a conclusion to his story of broken bolts...

basically the flywheel had been around for a while, eventually found that the holes through the flywheel had elongated very slightly. I think this allowed the flywheel to oscillate on the bolts just enough during gear changes to eventually fatigue them until one would break, a second bolt would break and then they all went.

The other thing I forgot to mention was that the engine builder did not use dowels for exactly this reason, if the bolts broke it generally allowed the flywheel to spin on the end of the crank and do less damage to the engine or the car than if dowels where used where he found that it tended to break the crank more often than not in a similar situation.

Most of the times that he had seen broken bolts where exactly as a result of the impact of the flywheel on the road or a kerb.

as an aside There was an earlier post about steel cranks, they are allowed out here, refer to the ff website or CAMS page for the regs.

Miles in Front - That's the Ford factory support for you. From memory the catalogue number in the manual has been wiped from the ford parts computer listing and is too hard to find. The only time I used the appointed dealer in Sydney to buy some bits it took 3 weeks, 7 phonecalls, 2 visits and a pink elephant to get the right bits, even with their catalogue number.

I now mainly use Larner, it's easy, its reliable, it fits and it arrives in the post in a couple of days.
