Barn find, rare racing Mk1 Ford Escort.

Hi Pete of Spec-R, can you put some images up of the Escorts space framed chassis, as we would all love to see it without the shell.

Thank you for everyone who,s kept this topic going. We have been very busy here at Spec-R hence delay here getting some more pics up of the Escort.
Iam posting up some pics of the body removed and showing the rear end of the chassis, and the work we have ahead of us.
I will keep the pics coming now a couple at a time as not to bombard you all with too many at once.Thank you all for your comments very much appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Pete@Spec-R

Space framed Mk1 Escort.

Superb technology for the 1970's.

It was lucky the car was kept in a dry barn for the last 40 years, keeping the ravages of the English weather at bay is always a big problem, especially between damp and metal.

I hope you have deep pockets though Spec-R, because looking at it, every component needs refurbishing and for you to refurbish this Special Saloon to a high standard will cost a fortune by todays prices, but well worth the expense and hundreds of hours of effort.

I agree,hundreds of hrs.
We,ve already spent a vast amount of time on her already, plus finding all the history/phone calls etc etc.Soon mounts up.Yes even though it was stored inside for many years above ground.Signs on the chassis, wheels etc indicate it spent the early years in storage on the ground!!where most of the deterioration was caused. Shame, but these things happen and cant be changed.
Move forward and restore this escort to its former glory.
Couple more pics attached as promised, one showing close up of the nickle bronze welding used during the manufacture of the chassis.

What a great car this was and will be!
What diff is that?
1970, and not a lot of cars had independent rear suspension to find parts from.
Very much looking forward to the re-build details.

The time involved will be huge, but the end result will be just fantastic.
Fascinating.

"Hillclimber",all the info on the car is on page 3 including the 3 litre bmw diff you asked after.
The car is certainly in a much different state than when it first rested in our garage 44 years ago as a new build ! Both me and my sister were so very excited that after all this time one of our dads cars was discovered all be it in the sad condition it is today. So much work for the spec-r team ahead but one day I hope it will be born again as a tribute to our dad and those who have been involved with the car all these following years, good luck and deep pockets(it cost a fortune then so I dread to think about todays prices !!!).....G&S W

Thank you. It was the inboard brakes that threw me, best way to reduce unsprung weight.
It's only money and we only live once, so really worth doing.

Are you sure that's not just an early attempt at using biofuels?

This could make a really good refurbishment tale. Don't stint on the number and quality of the photos!

Anyone for burnt chestnuts this Xmas !!

It certainly looks as though these nuts may have been roasted at the last race event. Lap times may improve.

Out of curiosity, what is being driven off the back of the exhaust cam?

The 90 deg drive is partially hidden by that hose! In a normal Escort there wouldn’t be room between the bulkhead and cam carrier for that drive, but in a spaceframe car you can create your own space! Interesting that the engine and gearbox are mounted so far back that the normal ZF gear lever remote is not required, and the lever looks to be angled forward as well......

If it is John Robinson that may answer the question of who last built/rebuilt the Hart BDA engine.
I always thought that John Robinson (from Northampton if it's the JR that I'm thinking of) was more a chassis man than an engine man but I suppose that he was probably both!

John Robinson built and raced a 1300cc BDA Escort in the early 1970s and it used a space frame which he also built, but more in the Clubman's/ Mallock style. It may well be that the JR Escort predated Geoff Wood's car - I shall look out some old results sheets.

The thing that has grabbed my attention with this car is the lack of width in the footwell. Especially with the engine right alongside and the proximity to the outer edge of the chassis.

I appreciate that a single seater is much the same in terms of space - maybe less, but in the event of a driver's side collision of any significant magnitude I assume that space in the Escort would likely become somewhat smaller.

Whilst many more recent cars seem to to have attempted to move seats inwards a little closed to the centre line and well within the roll cage that design does not allow such an option as far as I can see. In fact it goes the other way.

Brave times - the '70s.
