Renault Clio heat problems/gearbox issues

I have a 2000 model W reg Renault Clio and have had trouble getting the car into reverse when it is left in the current hot weather.

Only solution so far - leave in shade for 30 minutes

Have checked these work/are full -clutch, gear selection, coolant, oil, eg once car is in reverse it drives fine. A 98' Mondeo I know of has issues like this but in winter. Is there anything I can do to remedy it other than shade which may not always be possible plus if I park in town and need to reverse out and can't i'll look daft! Thanx for your ideas in advance.

Can't help with a solution, but I've been having the same trouble with first and second on my 2001 Astra.

think yourself lucky. when it rains hard, my golf won't unlock with the remote...!

you could always reverse into the spaces?

seriously though, i'd be interested to hear the exact techniczal reasoning behind this.

Bella, I think it is something to do with just expansion/contraction of metal in heat/cold but that's only my though. Normally reverse into spaces anyway cause I'm lazy when I want to leave :-)

Have you approached your dealer about a change of specification gearbox lubrication?

I had a 1982 VW Golf which had a similar problem. After long motorway driving it became impossible to cleanly select first or second. The successful remedy was for a VW specialist to switch the gearbox oil for a more viscous mixture. The downside was stickier gearchanging while cold in winter, but I could live with that.

This may not be the solution but you never know...

I sometimes have trouble getting reverse on my corsa - I have to put it back into neutral, wait a few secs then try again & it goes in.

I really hate the sound of someone grinding their gear box into reverse.

Silly Q but why do cars make a diff sound when driving backwards?

Also in a traffic jam once I took my car out of gear but when it started moving again, no matter how hard I tried it wouldn't go into 1st for ages - pretty embarassing as was holding everyone up

Try putting clutch all the way down sunflower and lifting off then doing it again but this time put car into gear. There is a few cars which have this problem especially switching from first to reverse.

The different noise when reversing is something to do with the way the gears are cut I think- there's no 'syncromesh' on the reverse gear. I'm sure someone will tell me if i'm wrong or hopefully explain it better

Me too, but only when cold. No problem when temp is up to normal.

ITS EASY JUST CHANGE YOUR OIL TO A DIFFERENT TEMPERATURE OIL
DONT WORRY ABOUT THE THICKNESS BUT IF YOUR IN A HOT AREA GET A OIL THAT TOLERATES HIGHER TEMPERATURES AND VICE VERSA FOR COLDER TEMPERATURES

Please STOP SHOUTING... it's early!

And I guess you're talking gearbox oil, as engine oil viscosity/temperature will have no impact on gear changes...

yeh sorry i didnt specify yeh im talkin gearbox oil.
if you wanna do it yourself its a 10 min job, just need gearbox oil and a hand pump.
I did couple of days ago.
i dont know about thickness but sounds like your in a hot place so get something like (THE THICKNESS BY MANUFACTURER)-(90-100) and that should fix it.

Never heard of that odd one on a Clio!

Of course it doesn't apply to anyone here on 10/10ths, but the most popular reason for not getting gears is that nice rubber mat that protects the carpet and stops the clutch disengaging all the way!

I have an idea - each time you park leave the car in reverse gear. Just start the engine with the clutch down (obviously) then you're off & away with no trouble or embarassment!

which mats are best - rubber or carpet style ones. Mine are the latter with a nice blue trim to match my my car's bodywork.

thats odd on a Renault never had that problem but it is posible that the gear oil is messed up remeber back in the 80's renault was designed for cold weather and that concept was based on all there cars so its posible that u need something a little lighter
