World Series by Renault, Round 7 - Magny-Cours
Round 7 of the World Series takes place this weekend at Magny-Cours in Central France, a circuit new to the championship for 2007.
With 6 races to go, Alvaro Parente has a comfortable 20-point lead over Ben Hanley, but has been given a 5-place grid penalty for Race 1 this weekend (along with Mikhail Aleshin) for dangerous driving at Donington Park. There has also been one driver change since Donington with current British F3 racer Esteban Guerrieri replacing Richard Philippe at Fortec, the Frenchman still recovering from the broken hand he sustained at Spa a month ago. The Teams' championship is looking a little tighter after Donington with just 41 points covering first-placed Carlin Motorsport down to Epsilon Euskadi in fourth. We're also due to have the public unveiling this weekend of the new 2008 World Series car, which should be pretty exciting Weekend Schedule Friday 21st September 09:00 - 09:45 - First Practice 14:55 - 15:40 - Second Practice Saturday 22nd September 09:00 - 09:20 - Qualifying (Group B) 09:25 - 09:45 - Qualifying (Group A) 14:35 - Race 1 (27 laps) Sunday 23rd September 13:00 - Race 2 (27 laps) (All times are Magny-Cours local time) |

I know it's only a test, but not a bad first result from Guerrieri.

I expect Guerrieri to be quick this weekend - I think he is being wasted a bit in Formula 3 when he has experience racing in Formula 3000. Hopefully this will be the weekend in which he can show off his talent, although it probably helps he raced well there in the Euroseries earlier this year.
Will wait until the second session though to make a formal judgement on speed |

I agree with runshaw, it's a pretty good effort from him. It's a bit ironic isn't it that he's racing a Dallara chassis at the home of Mygale!
It's not a very big picture, but over at ItaliaRacing.net you can see the new 2008 WSR car: http://www.italiaracing.net/notizia.asp?id=16434&cat=5 |

You have to say the pressure is on Parente at the moment. He may be 20 points ahead of Hanley, but as they say, it's easier to chase than be chased, and his 5-place grid penalty for Race 1 means he really has to pull something out of the bag in qualifying. |

Here's the combined grid from both sessions, although Parente still has to drop five places due to the penalty imposed on him in the last round at Donington Park:

A great job by Ben in pretty atrocious conditions... Grabbed 2nd from Bonanomi off the line and then pressed Piccione, setting fastest lap in the process... the Monagasque was having braking problems, running too deep into the final corner for several laps, before eventually going off, allowing Ben to slip past...
Hanley then opened up a big gap, took rear tyres (Piccione took fronts, telling you all you need to know about their respective set-ups, perhaps) and rejoined in 2nd, behind the very late-stopping Davide Valsecchi When the Italian finally stopped, Hanley was left to count off the laps, avoid standing water and not think of the closing stages in the wet Zolder race in 2006, where his car got away from him while he led, just a few laps before the end! Valsecchi rejoined JUST in front of the up-to-speed Piccione and they had a great dice for the remaining podium spots, Valsecchi ALMOST but not-quite handing it to Clivio at the final corner in exactly the same manner as Piccione himself had given away the lead... The Monagasque's attack was blunted a little being badly delayed by Alejandro Nunez, engrossed in a battle for 12th with Danil Move, as he was being lapped - but for the 2 seconds lost, he might have been able to pressure Valsecchi into relinquishing the position before the flag, which came out after the maximum time plus one lap... Delighted with his win, Hanley completed two slow-down laps, just to ensure that the chequered flag hadn't come out too early and that there would be no question marks over his maiden win. |

Great win for Ben, especially in those conditions (you could also say it's his first 'proper' win, given that his 1st place at Misano last year was due to Vettel and Maldonado being disqualified).
Things have really closed up at the top, with Hanley taking a massive 16 points out of Parente's lead: 1. Parente, 90 2. Hanley, 84 3. Vettel, 74 4. Pavlovic, 65 5. Albuquerque, 61 6. Barba, 45 And finally Piccione get's the result he's deserved all year - although by the sounds of it he nearly gave it away with a 360° spin! Nice to see an all French front-row for tomorrow's race too. |

Report and results from Autosport here. With Parente 4th and Hanley 7th, the gap has opened up to 11 points. Still all to play for, really.
Interestingly, Tech 1 has edged ahead of Carlin in the Teams' Championship. I didn't see that one coming. |

Hanley has apparently been given a 25 second penalty for causing a collision with Milos Pavlovic, dropping him from 7th to 14th, and thus no points.
Tech 1 were in a bit of a dilemma near the end of the race with Jousse running 3rd and Parente 4th. Simon Abadie must have been thinking "Do I let Julien take a podium in his home round or get him to let Alvaro through to gain an extra point?". I'm no fan of team orders, but on this occasion I think they should have let Parente through for the sake of his championship. |

This is FR3.5 WSR Fan not F1, Jousse pays the bills too, why should Parente be let pass? Let him fight for position and win it.

Third race in a row he hits Pavlovic and he gets away with only a 25sec penalty.
