F1 Grand Prix Masters

Just wondering what peoples' takes on this series are. I am not sure whether it is this winter or next, I THINK next, that it starts. Got mixed messages on that front, anyone else help on that score?

I am well liking the prospect, really rather funky IMO.

Would be good to see.

Apparently Alan Jones, Stefan Johansson and Johnny Herbert are doing it.

Yes but drivers comming out of long retirement and enjoy life with their family I doubt are willing to risk their lives, especially if their is no money imvolved.

And with drivers like Niki Lauda, Keke Rosberg and Nigel Mansell havn't raced for years and would not be as sharp as they used to be and certainly not as fit.

Although the BTCC masters was a sucsess a lot of the drivers were still racing.

I mean Alan Jones hasn't raced in F1 for well over 20 years.

Well, AJ is definitely signed up.

The cars are identical Zytek-Judds.

Probably with big cockpits!

Just remember one thing... All these people are competitive down to the core. It is one of the reasons they were so good in their day. They will do what it takes to be competitive in such circumstances. Obviously they won't be as fit as they were in their prime, but don't be surprised if some of these drivers start training or step it up just because of this. It's in their nature...

Then again, the pub is in my nature...

Yes but if you have been out of competitive racing for over 12 months you reactions are not as sharp and you shall find yourself not as fast.

You only have to look at Jacques Villenuve who hadn't raced for 12 months exacutly and he has struggled fitness problems and raw speed.
And he had been training quite oftern.

Any series that gives the fans another chance to see their favourite drivers behind the wheel gets my vote. If it gets off the ground I have my doubts on it lasting more than one or two seasons though.

As for Jacques, he was in an unfamilar car and got caught out by the increase of speed over the year he'd been away. He was only a tenth off Alonso's fastest lap at Brazil for what it's worth - hardly lacking raw speed.

I expect the 'masters' will all get the same amount of testing and practise time so it rules out some excuses already

Also, is this going to be a teams championship or are the cars going to be prepared by the same group?

On the subject of these old foggies not being race ready. Well it is true they won't be top draw, but that is not the point. It'll be for fun. Fun for them and, hopefully, fun for us. If it happens.

Read a quiote from Jones talking about how he'll have to get back into the gym and so on. The point is any drivers who sign up to it will only do so if they are wanting to give it their best shot, as someone earlier said these people are hyper competitive by their nature.

I am not looking forward to it, and will watch it (if it happens and it is available to me), because I think it will be the greatest thing in the world ever.

As has been said before, and I thoroughly agree with, the point of it is for people to see racers they either have never seen before or not in a longtime.

Entertainment is all it would be, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I wouldn't want it to turn into a luvvie-fest though - none of this "after you, Claude" business.

I'm want to see some thorough arse-kickings being dished out across the ranks.

I was wondering if there were any cpncrete plans for the format of the series? I don't recall coming across any... Come to think of it I should really just invetigate that myself and stop being so lazy.

Hrrmmm, I have not had much success - but then I am probably just doing a poor job of it. Also I am a tad lazy and have not spent an age trying.
