Probably because I've been watching it since the mid 60's and like any addiction it's very hard to stop.....but I'm almost cured now.

My deep seated angst stems from seeing a sport I've adored for most of my life, dying before my very eyes and nobody seems to know how to stop it from happening. The FIA, Ecclestone and the teams themselves are all to blame.

The current generation of hybrid powered cars, the ridiculous application of a mind boggling array of penalties, coupled to effectively engineering overtaking so it can only be executed on a straight, are just a few examples of where F1 has gone so wrong. Add to that tyres which prevent hard racing, aerodynamics which only function in clean air and fuel consumption which promotes economy runs and you have to wonder if anyone actually wants to race.....I mean really race!

It doesn't have to be like that.

Since the'60s! Wow, you've seen most of the boring eras, stupid disqualifications and rubbish rule changes then.

The biggest change I've witnessed over a 50 year period is Respect for the Sport.

Any sports person must understand the culture, the principles, the traditions and the etiquette which transcends their chosen discipline. It is these values which give any sport a sense of purpose.

Golf,Tennis,Cricket and Rugby for example, work hard to ensure the core fabric of their sport remains intact. F1 has lost any virtues it may have once had, winning at any cost, even at the cost of the sport itself, is all that seems to matter. That's why the 'Good old days' were better......drivers like Brabham, Clark,Hill,Stewart etc respected the sport and understood it's core principles.More recent World Champions like Prost, Hill, Hakkinen and Button understand too.

F1 could be so much better than it currently is but not until Eccelstone has gone, the FIA grow some gonads and the teams & drivers re-learn the ethics of their sport.

Great post Littleman, you have neatly summed up how I feel too!

And again above!

Everyone in F1 is so busy chasing the almighty dollar that they are just killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Agree with both these guys, (wnut and Littleman). I have followed the sport for a similar period and the problems it has now are of its own making.

They have lost their way, didn't value what they had a bit like the line in Joni Mitchells song (You don't know what you've got till it's gone.....) and then you try to get it back but it won't come back until the people running the sport get some gonads (integrity).

You can try and legislate it but that will not do it. That's what is happening now. It is over legislated.... because it is owner legislated....killing their own goose....

A bit like McLaren and Lotus woes too. (of their own making)

if this forum existed 50 years ago then there would no doubt be forum members who were saying that racing was better 50 years prior to that.

for me, the biggest change in the last 25-30 years (as that covers my watching years) for me has been, like all sports, are the huge improvements in coverage, picture quality and advances in home electronics (big screen TVS and internet access etc). personally i wouldn't trade better picture quality plus laptop with the live telemetry over the b&w images taken from one or two fixed position cameras.

the downside of better coverage, better images, internet access etc is that the sport has been demystified and now we get to see F1 warts and all in real time.

it certainly looks messed up but i remain unconvinced that if you were able to shine a 'modern' spotlight on F1 50 years ago that you would see a sport fundamentally different then what we have now.
