Porsche 997 GT3 R

Stuttgart. Following the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is entering yet another racing car in the 2010 motorsport season: The 911 GT3 R will be raced in series based on the international FIA GT3 regulations, thus succeeding the 911 GT3 Cup S. The main focus in developing this new model was on even better drivability and even easier handling.

The 911 GT3 R is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine delivering maximum output of 480 bhp (353 kW) transmitted to the rear axle by a sequential six-speed dog gearbox.

The starting point in developing the 911 GT3 R weighing just 1,200 kg or 2,646 lb was the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup presented in September for one-make cup racing. Thanks to its increase in engine size by 0.2 litres, the GT3 R offers 30 bhp more than the Cup model. Both cars are based on the extra-wide body of the 911 GT3 RS street-legal sports car.

An anti-lock brake system (ABS), traction control and an e-gas with “throttle-blip” function make it much easier to get used to this new GT3 racing car than its predecessor, meaning that the new model is also more appropriate for the ambitious amateur racing driver.

Flared wheel arches added on to the body both front and rear bear clear testimony to the wider track than on the former model. And like all second-generation versions of the 911, the new 911 GT3 R also comes with striking LED rear light clusters.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R is making its world debut on 14 January 2010 at the Birmingham Motor Show. The car is built by Porsche’s Motorsport Department at the Weissach Development Centre and will be delivered to Customer Teams the world over as of spring 2010. The base price of the Porsche 911 GT3 R is 279,000 euros plus local sales tax/VAT.

It's not a car. It's just a dream with 4 wheels! I think it will be more efficient than Cup S, and will fight for GT3 title. It's a superb car, and it seems to be a variant of the bigger and even more wild 997 GT3 RSR.
I think it will be one of the stars in the next season!
Huge car!

This is going to be quicker than the RSR if those figures are correct, either way it is EPIC!

That is a beautiful race car. A well driven GT3R, like most GT3 cars, will get pretty close to the GT2 grid.

arakis has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
don't ge why everone is geting so excited about it, its a gt3 car, witch means after the beging season testing is done and the handycap weighs have been passed out by FIA the car will be equal with all the rest, and if you add the quality of the drivers and the teams to the mix, the speed, or superiority of the car wont have anything to do with the championship, altough its one hell of a looker

Will there be steel liners in the engine cylinders? I believe the RSR had the liners retrofitted for ALMS and were penalized.

If you love cars and races, you MUST be excited when a car like this is shown for the first time (but not only for the fist time)! GT2 or GT3, GT1 or GT4, a great car is a great car.
And 911 is a marvelous car!

So what does that make a 2008 CUPs worth considering you can buy a brand new 2010 cup car for €150,000 which i think would be just as quick as a CUPs

Also does it have the same engine as an rsr and is the lifing the same

Really?

It's newsworthy but not exactly earth shattering, the third GT3 spec 997 variant in 4 years and yet more cost escalation in the class.

I'll happily attribute 'blame' to both - The rule makers for not preventing escalation and Porsche and others for exploiting the opportunity

250,000 Euros spent less than 2 years ago in a Cup S suddenly seems like remarkably poor value doesn't it?

I see your point Graham , but tell me something .

What manufacturer doesnt exploit the rules to win ? If the rules were written in such a way that they couldnt be exploited , thats another thing altogether .

Blame the rule makers I say .

I simply feel that if you are going to make a point of excluding manufacturer entries with a view to containing cost and tech escalation you need to go the extra mile and put at least something in the homiologations regs to prevent it!

I do understand Porsche in this case as the Cup S hasn't been too competitive this year. Did they win a race or even get on the podium? If they did, I missed it. One might blame the drivers, but I remember seeing a couple of Porsche Junior drivers doing a race or two.

So, either they build a better car or the rulers should have given them some help to get Porsche on equal speed with the Aston, Audi, Ford etc. Of course, it would be completely pointless if this car would now be more penalized and end up doing the same lap times as the S...

Talking of rules, I never quite understood why the weakest of all the GT3 engines was given a smaller air restrictor, like Porsche had this year... If that car needed to be slowed down, I would have preferred another way of doing it, so that the cars would not only be equal in lap times, but also as close as possible on top speed, corners, braking etc. Lap time is one thing, fighting for positions is another.

Anyway, back to topic: great looking car!

Yeah , I agree but then again , thats down to the rule makers , or not ?

The manufacturers must have lawyers and all sorts going over the papers to find that elusive loophole .

It should be very interesting compare Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and Ferrari F430 GTC prices. I suppose you would address your disappointment on Ferrari, more than on Porsche...
Porsche is cheaper than Ferrari, and italian manufacturer has helped costs escalation.
I think you should meditate about this.
