Chevette GSN336W was owned by Hugh McCaig, who reformed the Ecurie Ecosse team in 1983.It was painted white and ran in the Scottish over 1600cc road saloon class, which required cars to be road-legal. From memory, it was prepared by Laurie Doonan, Edinburgh. As far as I can see from old programmes and race reports, the first race it took part in was at Ingliston in April 1984, where Jimmy McRae drove to victory. McRae had at least two more outings in 1984.
Some 1984 /85 programmes list the driver as A.N. Other, so it could have been McRae, possibly McCaig, and on occasion Robin Gray was mentioned as the likely driver.

Sometime around late 1984 – early 1985, the car was painted Ecuire Ecosse blue.
In 1985, McRae, Hugh Chalmers and David Leslie all drove it.
Leslie won at Ingliston in July 1985 in terrible conditions.

Throughout 1986, Chalmers seems to have been the only driver, and had many victories.
In 1987, Ecurie Ecosse replaced the Chevette with an Opel Manta.

I last saw it at the Doune Hill Climb in June 1996 – painted white / red / yellow.
At that time it was owned by David Gray from Newtonmore (Lakefield restorations?). He said that he had restored it.
Later in 1996, it was advertised in ‘Motoring News’ for c. ten thousand Pounds.
I would be interested to know where it is now – an ideal candidate for the current
Scottish Classic Sports and Saloons!

Chevette

Think this may have been run in "Thundersaloons" at some point. I remember a car similar (red wings), running at a Brands Hatch meeting, driven (I think?) by someone with surname of Adams ??? ( I think??). Not sure of year late 80's early 90's. Will have a check through some old programmes, judging by dates mentioned the dates would not tie up!! Very famliar colour scheme though.

Dick Adams from Watton in Norfolk bought the car in 1989 ish,Gerry Johnstone rebuilt it, i sold my Firenza to David Gray, he told me he bought the Chevette minus engine, this would have been about 1995 ish.

wow thanks for the response i m shocked at how much info you've given us ,we can now add this to our records of this HSR, the car has a lot of history and would be a shame if it got used to reshell a rally car, will have to speak to Jimmy next time i come accross him at an event, thanks very much and if anyone else has anything that would be great ,Graham Kerr membership secretary of the Droop Snoot Group
