NZ - F5000 races 2004

Have any of our Kiwi friends (Racingfxgt?) photos taken at the recent F5000 races?
I was speaking to winner Mike Wrigley and Frank/Judy Lyons at the historic show yesterday - 22 F5000 cars on the grid!
That is more than in most of the races here in Europe in the good old days of the Formula.

Thanks David. I've reproduced the results in the form I've used elsewhere:

Tasman Cup Revival Series Race
Teretonga Park, 14 February 2004
1 Mike Wrigley, Lola T332 [T330 HU23(B)], ? laps,
2 Murray Sinclair, Lola T332 [HU28], ? laps,
3 Ian Clements, Lola T332 [T330 HU12-3], ? laps,
4 Stan Redmond, McRae GM1 [009], ? laps,
5 David Abbott, Lola T430 [HU1], ? laps,
6 Tony Roberts, Talon MR1, ? laps,
7 Aaron Lewis, Elfin MR8A-C [8772], ? laps,
8 John Mann, Lola T332 ['2002-MS'], ? laps,
9 Phil Mauger, Begg [018], ? laps,
10 Steve Ward, Lola T142, ? laps,
11 Poul Christie, Lola, ? laps,
12 Roger Williams, McRae GM1 [002], 2 laps,
13 Judy Lyons, McLaren M18, 1 laps,
14 Lindsay O'Donnell, Begg FM5 [2], 0 laps,
UNKP Frank Lyons, Lola T332 ["HU42"], Unknown (practiced)
UNKP Stuart Lush, McRae GM1 [015], Unknown (practiced)

I know most of the cars well but Tony Robert's Talon, Steve Ward's Lola T142 and 'Poul' Christie's Lola are all news. Can anyone tell me anything about those three?

[For those curious about the notation on some of the Lolas, Wrigley's car is the second instance of T330 HU23 rebuilt on a T332 tub; Clements' T332 began life as T330 HU12 but has had three tubs, the latest being a T332; Mann's is a car effectively built from scratch by Mike Sheehan in 2002 and Frank Lyons is a T332 built using a Lola-supplied T332 tub plus parts of T330 HU6 but wearing the HU42 chassis plate.]

Thanks

Allen

Aaron Lewis's car is the car that raced in Can Am spec and the car that Max Stewart ran into on that fateful day in March, 1977. I believe that the NZ races would have been the first time ever that that car has raced as a F5000 since that accident, as it was converted to Can Am after the 77 crash.

Im pretty sure the Talon is a sister car i believe to the one Amon raced in the Kiwi Races of 75. It was brought from Texas, in around 2002 i think.

Only that the Talon is ostensibly an MR1A
Christie has had his Lola T190 for a few years
Can't help with any more detail sorry

BTW, is that Mike Sheehan or Mark Sheehan?

Thanks chaps

Good to know it's a T190 - and thanks for the origins of that Talon.

Sheehan is 'Michael' - I was abbreviating again.

Can anyone add entry numbers? I can see Lola T332s wearing numbers 15, 30, 32, etc on the warbirds site but I'm not really sure who's who.

See here: http://www.warbirdsovernewzealand.com/g3.htm

That should be good day out,be worth the price of admission to see the Begg 018 and the GM1 again.
Last time I saw the 018 at Pukekohe Jim Murdoch was chasing down Warwick Brown in the rain in '75.

The Lush car is very classy indeed and a credit to Stuart.

These cars are fragile though. Somewhere in Auckland, I believe their is Lola remnants - only one of four in the world or such??

I was fortunate enough to travel down to Ruapuna near Christchurch for the first of the F5000 races in the South Island. I cannot remember seeing so many magificent cars of this type in one place since the glory days back in the late 60s and early 70s. It was a great shame that the event was spoilt by the weather and a number of the cars did not venture out due to a lack of rain tyres.
I will attempt attach this picture that I took. Hope it works as it is my first effort.

Hi

Here's one from teretonga.
I have been to all 4 races so far and will cover the last event as well.
If anyone is interested, I can put some more on my web site.

10 cars from the field of 13 F-5000's. 3 didn't start.

Steve / Alex, welcome to ten-tenths! Thanks for your response. Great photo Alex!
According to Mike Wrigley, driver of the dark red Lola at the front of the photo above - the NZ F5000 runners have their cars set to run to 9000rpm plus, whereas Mike and Frank from the UK were only using 7500. Any ideas on this anyone?

Andrew, a couple of Aussie guys told me at Sandown that the Kiwi guys run the newer 350 chev heads etc, not exactly sure for the reason, the guy who was telling me was a hard charging Formula Atalntic/2 driver who was snapping at the heals of many of these guys, lol.

Allen, here is a link to the Sandown meet regarding pics

Hi guys, this is my first post on this site. Just stumbled accross it while researching. I really enjoyed the British racing saloon pics. I'll have to post some of the NZ variants.

I was at the Ruapuna meeting, and the entry was incredible. Also, a point worth noting is that the cars were allowed to run without mufflers unlike the other tracks around NZ. Pity about the weather. Hopefully this link works. This should clear up many of the questions regarding chassis numbers: http://www.oldracingcars.com/default.htm

I've just started a two part story on the F5000 series in NZ for New Zealand Classic Car mag which I write for. Terry Marshall, who I consider to be one of the best New Zealand photographers ever, has sent me about 30 pics for it covering the series from start to finish.

I'll have another go with the picture. First image was too large. Picture shows Ian Clements Lola T332 leading Stuart Lush in his McRae GM1. Frank Lyons follows in his T332.

Thanks Allen, great site. Its been really useful. If you like I could gather up a little info on some of the New Zealand built cars chassis numbers, such as the Beggs, and try and fill in some gaps for you?

I'll be covering most of the cars currently residing in NZ in my stories and tracing their racing and owner history, so should be able to provide you a bit of feedback.
