Cheap track day car??????

Hi,
Anyone got any suggestions what the best car would be (to use as a runabout 2nd car and to use on track days) for cheap money? (around 1k)
I've never done a track day b4 but thinking of trying it out.
would a hot hatch (205 gti, atra gte, golf gti) or would something like a large engined mk1 mondeo or cavalier/vectra be best?
Also would it be worth putting strut braces, cage etc in? (can have these custom made cheaply)
cheers for any info,
Dave

Something light like 205 GTi or Golf would be ideal, plus making it stiffer (cage, suspension etc) would make it fly.

Have a look for ex-750MC Hot Hatch/Stock Hatch cars, usually easy to make raod legal (if they aren't already),, plus stuff like the cage, suspension and other bits and pieces are already done. Might break the £1k budget though, depends if you want to get your hands dirty.

Well, it's pretty easy to get 170 bhp from a 2.0 bottom end. Cheap and easy for masses of torque and power.

Brakes can come off a Corrado.
Set of Koni Top adjustables and Eibach ARB's and handling will be more than good enough to enjoy around track. A few more minor changes/upgrades and you will be rattling along.

A tarmac-prepped rally car would do just as well.

Theres plenty of Golf engine swaps around, most VR6-powered I think.

Steve Wilkinson is a back marker
Golf GTi or 205 GTi

Either would be an ideal track day car and would equally be ideal for SPRINTS or HILLCLIMBS!

There are a large number of tarmac prepared cars in the Mod Prod class where in the speed events you can run on slicks!

Best of Luck!

Very few track cars end up VR6 powered - too heavy and not enough go.

Most seem to go for a 2.0 8v or 2.0 16v.
Other options are 1.8 G60 (supercharged), 1.8 20v Turbo (big, big power here)

Go for a bmw E30 325, they can be had for as little as £250 and have 170bhp as standard and RWD and handle beautifully

Porsche 944 (from £1500 for an early one (165 Bhp) or £5000 for an S2 (211 Bhp) ) or a 924S (same engine but lighter & narrower body for £1000-1200). Both cars have excellent handling.

There are loads about at places like "PH Sportscars" of Shardlow (near Donington Park) and spares are not a problem.

Thats about the price sort of price for one - the Mi16 gives the 205 a huge kick up the backside and makes the power-to-weight ratio even more scarey! Go for it if you can afford it.

Spares for a Porsche 944 or 924S can be OK. Porsche lowered the prices of early Porsches some time ago and there are plenty of 944s at specialist breakers like PH Sportscars or Lodge Sports (sponsor of the 924 race series). Plus, as long as you buy well, the cars tends to be pretty reliable anway.

About a year ago I decided not to buy a 924S that I had seen at PH for reasons that escape me now (but probably due to the fact that I didn't have the bottle to front up to my wife with a 5th car!). I regret it now, though. The car had only done 90 000 miles with FSH but it had had a slight bang at the front. It was avaialble for £950 sold as seen or £1250 repaired and MOT'd!!! Should have bought, it would have made a great track day car!

Just got my hands on a Golf 16v MkII gti goes like stink and cost 475. No rust and plenty of room to enhance performance and handling. Should be fun going through the process. Happy hunting........
