ELMS 2020 LMP2 Class

Am wondering if the LMP2 Class for 2020, needs to be renamed, Class Oreca?

Would perhaps seem unlikely there will be any Dallara's. Will any team go and buy a Ligier? Would seem unlikely.

Will there be any Ligier's running in 2020?

If it turns out to be an Oreca only class, I believe that is down to the inability of the ACO, or political not prepared to do so, to allow updates for both Ligier and Dallara, to balance the performance gap with the Oreca.

What is achieved when it becomes a one make only class? That is bad for the sport for sure, and may not help the ELMS to maintain the current growth factor into the nest seasons.

There should be at least one non-Oreca
https://tentenths.com/forum/showpost...&postcount=337

But yes it's a pathetic, the exact thing that was deemed to happen in these sort of circumstances. However closing the gap via artificial performance balancing would be even worse. Fix the regulations first, don't take the easy way of manipulation again.

Anyway, if Carlin returns again and gets their s*it together I think the Dallara could be somewhat good at some circuits - even when the stupid regulations forbid any development - but it's not really much to look forward to is it.

Keo Racing will run their newly acquired ex-High Class Dallara - Inbter Europol are committed to Ligier, probably two cars there, and I'm tracking a potential new entrant with a Ligier too

So that makes at best 4 non Orecas out of probably around 20 LMP2 total.

Non LMP2 question but I hope that LMP3 is more than just a Ligier / Norma (Duqueine) battle next year?

No - it means that’s a first stab at it

We had quite a few extra Dallaras and old-gen-P2s (hoped to be) entered for ASLMS as well, yet they never materialized. So do not get your hopes up

There was a small side mention that finally confirmed boring spec tires for LMP2
https://www.lemans.org/en/news/make-...hypercar/53153

To facilitate on-track cohabitation LMP2 will have a single tyre supplier and engine power will be reduced by 30kW as of next season. These measures will help keep costs under control.

Hurray of crappiness

So soulless spec tires now officially mandated for WEC LMP2 but not sure if for ELMS and other regional championships. I mean you would think that be the case for the other series as well since many of the cars will be going to Le Mans where spec tires would be forced upon, and switching tire brands mid-season is tiresome, but aren't teams doing the same exact thing in GTE-AM as well... boring spec-Dunlops for ELMS full season but for LM every team switches to Michelins, presumably because they're just better. So I guess there is slim hope of tire war not completely dying out quite yet, even if probable

In the modern world of spec and bop, how much freedom will be left in 5 years time I wonder

Reduced power, spec tires, spec Oreca's... there goes what little interest I had in the class.

Spec tyres for LMP2 felt inevitable when they announced the target lap time for hypercar (can we start calling it LMH?). It's an easy way to control lap times. A tyre war would have been inconvenient.

If Goodyear gets the spec contract as expected I would like to show them this from 2015

https://www.motorsport.com/wec/news/...n-lmp2/529181/

Q: It has been rumoured that tyre companies new to LMP racing may join Dunlop and Michelin with programs. How would you feel about this?
"We would very much welcome it. We are proud of the fact that the only class in last years' Le Mans 24 Hours that had open tire competition we were very strong and got great results. We don't sit on our laurels though and we would actually like to see more competition from other companies, as long as it is a level playing field and there is no reason to doubt that as the ACO and FIA have policed it very well."

Q: What are your opinions of the mooted new LMP2 'controlled key supplier' plans for 2017 onward?
"Regulations are set by the governing bodies and not us, so we have to abide by the rules. Our opinion is that we enjoy and prefer open competition. The reason we have this position is that because LMP2 has been very well policed and the ACO has run their policy of having the specifications known at the very start of the year means for us there can be a tire war that is controlled but without getting in to multiple specifications to suit different chassis.

But I'm sure they'll be rambling about unprecedented technical challenge it brings to supply the whole grid and blah blah, like Michelin will do in Hypecar

I don't know if Michelin will tout that exactly, but there will be no small challenge to make one tire work with multiple chassis. In imsa there's a ton of engineering work that goes in though the compound is already determined.

Though yes, any spec tire for spec oreca class will greatly reduce that work required.

But - not counting Riley - all of these 2017 spec chassis have already used old Dunlops for years and many of them the 'new' Goodyears as well, there's not going to be much of transition

It may have been different if there still had been SMPs, Zyteks, Kodewas, Domes and whatever solely using Michelins or Yokohamas etc

Barthez out of Panis-Barthez Competition.

Well they continue as Panis Comeptition, as Tech1 Racing (who effectively ran the cars all this time), will someone else replace Barthez or will they disappear altogether?

Even if one agrees with the said statement - and I do not - they do not have the same excuse for the regional series as LMH is not part of them. But I'm sure the spec deals will also come in force for ELMS and ASLMS (perhaps delayed but still)
