I have to say that seeing this for the first time, the format is very messy.

- The timing line isn't on front straight...weird
- Clock doesn't stop for Red flags .... How can you allow half the field to be effected by not just 1 but 2 red flags but allow the other half to qualify unhindered.
- Cars in pit boxes when clock starts, automatically placing last pit box of group at a disadvantage
- Dropping your fastest time for causing a Yellow...surely loss of track time and possible flat spotted tyres enough of a penalty

Also a question, how is it determined who is in each of the two groups?

The loss of fastest time for the block by Herta is about the only ruling that made sense.

Oh and those NBCSports graphics are horrid, they took up so much of the screen area it was hard to understand. Also that bottom right split time graphic was just plain confusing.

Nikki Katz should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Why would sato’s time be deleted for going down an exit lane but dixon’s not for spinning and pulling out in front of another car?

Diffey on the commentary said it was because when Dixon did it, no other cars were on flying laps, only out laps.

Which is a nonsense as cars don't complete their outlap before reaching the timing line, as the timing line was before the final corner.

Qualifying:

Will Power took pole, his eighth at St Pete. Team mate Josef Newgarden completes a Penske/Chevrolet shut out, with rest of the Fast Six made up of Hondas.

The two Swedish rookies, Felix Rosenqvist and Marcus Ericsson, were 3rd and 17th.

During Round 1 Group 1 qualifying there were two red flags, due to Marco Andretti stopping at the pit entry and Dale Coyne Racing's Santino Ferrucci crashing at Turn 13. As new rules state, causing a red flag results in the offending driver's two fastest laps being annulled, both will start near the back.

Sato would have got passed the first round but was penalised, by another new rule; causing a local yellow flag will result in the loss of the fastest lap.

Last year's winner, Sebastien Bourdais is 19th.

Ryan Hunter-Reay broke the lap record, in Round 1 Group 2, with a time of 01:00.1548, 107.722 Mph (173.362).

Ach, Sky are slicin' and dicin' this broadcast with ads.

Rosenqvist is unfazed by being at the sharp end. Bourdais out, engine I think.

The ads on Sky are doing my head in already, they seem to be just taking the US feed directly.

After watching years of ad free F1 and BTCC races I was hoping we’d be ad free, maybe too much to hope for

Actually he won it once in his fifth year in the series, his sixth year in F3.

Two Hondas have gone down with what looked like turbo issues. Might be a bunk part.

This racing is really annoying. They keep cutting away from the ads to show some!

BT with Keith Colladine (sp?) was much better if you could tune-out his know-little “expert” assistant who liked to share his lack of technical and tyre knowledge...

It comes back to technical difficulties and they haven't said what lap we're on, other than "long way to go". I'm assuming we're in the 70s.
