itís a tricky one to be honest.

like iíve said elsewhere on here, the biggest problem is policing. this thing doesnít spread at nearly the same rate if you follow the rules, and yet we have a fairly steady level of deaths atm. a significant number of people canít be trusted to do what theyíre told, and those are the ones we have to legislate for.

which is why weíre not going to see spectators at events for a while, i think. itís important to bear in mind that the sport has restarted not for spectators, but for the huge industry around it, and i think any admission to circuits will be done for the benefit of that rather than fans.

if they were driving the restart with spectators at the front of their minds thereíd be no 2020 season at all for everybody, not just the unfortunate young drivers like canning and the mclaren juniors at tolman who are going to miss out.

itíd be nice to have some spectators back by the end of the season if the stats allow it, but the priority is keeping everyone safe really, from fans to circuit staff to competitors. part of the joy of working in the sport is the big events, and itís pretty depressing to think that every race is going to be like a test day in terms of atmosphere. hopefully they can up the tv side a bit to compensate for not being able to attend.

Looks like I can make the first Donington meeting, Brands Hatch, Snetterton and, providing they are admitting spectators, Silverstone in November (break out the thermals!)

Thought about Silverstone as its that little bit nearer to me than donington, but Silverstone WEC and Blancpain races in April/May have been frostbite worthy, so not sure about chances in November!!!!

i think you can guarantee that silverstone in november is going to be wet

in all seriousness, i don’t think any of us in the paddock are happy about this from a personal perspective. but i’m really happy that you guys are going to be able to come back and experience the same delight i feel now every time someone fires up a car it’s going to be a great season, regardless of who is and isn’t going to turn up.

Silverstone still have no tickets at all on sale. Interesting reflection of differing priorities: Silverstone putting everything into two F1 races behind closed doors, MSV finding a way to get fans into events far earlier than expected. I say this without judgment, itís just a stark difference that struck me.

doubt it’s as intentional as putting everything into f1 and ignoring fans as much as it is just plain old doing it differently. two completely different organisations planning totally different seasons and managing very different staffing situations.

taking new ticket sales would help with the cashflow situation when it comes to refunds for cancelled events though.

Also, Silverstone has lots of extra areas and Grandstands that they need to work out how they are going to keep safe, it's probably a larger site than all of MSV's real estate put together....

(My guess would be no punters across the bridges or tunnel into the main paddock/in-field zone.)

yeah, i agree, particularly about the potential for no centre access. it’s a big site which should theoretically make things easier for spectators to socially distance, but it presents its own issues in terms of suitable toilet facilities (donington are solving that with portaloos in the paddock at the moment which is a monster wtf, those things are about as clean as a council bin), keeping them cleaner than usual, different layouts of security staff maybe, rearranging catering facilities...

Well if you can't do that then i think it would be difficult charging full price for the tickets, and it is the money the circuit needs.

Probably wet and certainly cold. I've done the Walter Hayes meeting several times and you can leave the sun cream at home!

For sure. Like I said, no judgement. Just, as you describe, very different business models
