I stumbled over Fox playing the Sandown500 from 2003 this morning.

Tuned in just as Ambrose pitted for driver change and watched Ingall beach the lead car at T1.

$108 for an adult ticket on Sunday to the Bathurst 1000. For Sunday! No pitpass, just a GA ticket. $148 if you want to put a foot in the paddock. This mob have lost the plot.

$10 per hour for the day, Good deal i reckon, kids under 12 are free also

AFL Resticted view standing for their Grand Final are $150 and the most seats start at around $250, (kids start at $150) even the week before in the preliminary final most tickets are above $110

you can also go both saturday and sunday for just $20 more or $141 for the whole 4 days

I just paid $65 for a ticket to the world cup qualifier between Aus and Thailand. Over quicker than you can drink 2 beers.

You cannot compare prices of mainstream sports like AFL or Rugby League with prices for niche stuff like motor racing.

Motor Racing should never be expecting people to pay the same comparative dollars they would to watch a car race compared to what the main stream are prepared to pay to watch the footy. There is not enough of us.

To claim that State of Origin is dying is a ridiculous and desperate comment

We as motor racing fans all think Bathurst is bigger than the likes of the ashes or the AFL Grand Final.

Bathurst is a popular Australian event and a household event in terms of everyone has heard of it, however in reality to the general population it most certainly is not at the same stature as the Ashes, the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup or the Mens Final of the Australian Tennis Open.

I'm from Melbourne originally, but a Sydneysider these days

You are not looking at it realistically if you are claiming the State of Origin crowds were down this year by that much.

Game 1 drew 50,390 at Suncorp Stadium
Game 2 drew a sell-out 82,259 at ANZ Stadium
Game 3 drew a sell-out 52,540 at Suncorp

Where is your supposed missing 40,000? At most they were missing 2,150 from game 1...

State of Origin Game 3 was also the most watched TV show of 2017, so the people are still watching on TV too

Last years Supercheap Auto 1000 was the highest rating 1000 ever, peaking at 3.1 million

http://www.speedcafe.com/2016/10/11/...bathurst-1000/

By comparison, This years Mens Final of the Australian Tennis Open drew 4.4 million viewers, still well below the most watched Australian Tennis Open Final in 2005, which drew in 5.56 million

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/busi...dea8430c2ed19e

Bathurst certainly draws in attention, and is a well known Australian event, but quite clearly the likes of the Tennis Open are more appealing to a wider audience.

You also need to look at AFL crowd numbers and TV ratings, both per capita out strips motor racing by a country mile. I don't even understand how that can be in question?

We are all racing fans, but it is foolish to lose sight of where it is really placed on the sporting landscape of Australia.

Interesting fact!
The trouble with using statistics to support an argument is that they can usually be twisted to support any side.
Yes, State of Origin numbers attendances were down in 2017 compared to 2016, by about 8000. And 2016 was down by about 31,000 when compared to 2015, so yes, on those numbers, the game surely must be losing popularity!

But look closer:
This year, 2 games were at the smaller capacity Suncorp Stadium, with 1 at ANZ.
In 2016, 2 games were at the larger capacity ANZ Stadium, with 1 at Suncorp.
The capacity of ANZ is listed as 83500, Suncorp 52500. So with 31,000 less seats to sell, of course numbers were going to be down!!!
And in 2015. there was 1 game at Suncorp, 1 at ANZ, and 1 at the MCG, with the biggest crowd of all 3 years at over 91,000 people.
Next year, the game comes back to Melbourne again; let's see what that does to the numbers!

As for the motorsport popularity test - I like to consider what proportion of a diverse group of people not connected to or by sport are interested in or can old an informed conversation about motorsport, cricket, AFL (I live in Melbourne), or tennis? In any workplace or schooling environment I have spent time at, motorsport has been the least popular of the 4. Yes, it is my favourite - but I/we are in the minority. If we weren't, the daily print media would be giving it a lot more attention. How many pages of print do AFL/NRL/cricket/tennis grand slams get compared to motorsport??? Tons!
