probably pretty sparse at the beginning, but I guess they'lll pick up momentum and the grids will grow. After all it works very well in the US. Grand Am Cup (now Koni Challenge) is almost the same forumla)

Back in the BPR days, Porsche 911 GT2s raced in what was then the GT2 class. But after the dissolving of the GT1 class due to the Mercedes dominance, all the classes moved up, meaning the leftover GT2s were racing in the GT1 (or GTS) classes, and the new GT3-Rs were racing in GT2 (or N-GT).

Unfortunitly the turbos have relibilty challanges on the 996s and 997s for road racing.

Ok then, thanks for that, always wondered why the GT2 didn't race in GT2. Back to GT4, could we see a few lesser GT3 cars, such as the C6 Corvette or Porsche Carrera?

Are you saying that the Porsche GT3 and 'Vette Z06 should race in GT4 rather than GT3?
The Porsche GT3 is as good a car as you could want to compete with in GT3. Porsche already have a representitive in GT4 anyways with the Cayman

When we're relying on Saleen and Konigsegg (can never spell that) to boost GT1 grids, maybe it's time to embrace factory backed GT2 Porsche's, Ferrari's etc.

You only need to give them a 5% power boost, plus a few kilos lighter, and they'd be on the pace, or near enough, of the GT1 machines.

Allow GT3 cars a few more specialised components (and a fixed set of regs), to fill the GT2 void, with GT4 taking up the slack for teams who cannot afford the step up in competitin and finances.

I'll put money on the GT scene following this route, lol

And before anyone starts moaning, there's no need for the cars to be noticably slower, much of the GT1 cars sophistication is strangled by smaller restrictors and increased weight.

A lightweight, slightly more powerful 'GT2' 911 RSR would be spectacular.
You have neglected Lamborghini, who's fortunes in GT1 appear to be on the rise, and from time to time there seems to be GT1 rumours concerning Lister once more. Plus the restricted 550 project, although that doesn't seem to have much potential at the minute. Therefore if GT1 does fall, I guess it won't be until, say, after 2009 at the earliest - the current cars have quite some life in them yet.

We've all had this discussion before and it is a little off-topic, so I won't go into it again in too much detail - but in my view GT2 would need to be spiced up quite a lot (for starters drop the FIA GT noise regs in the class - never did understand why that was introduced) for me to appreciate it as much as GT1. There is a real spectacle about GT1 cars that simply cannot be denied or ignored.

If GT2 were to become the main GT category, then a power boost would be needed for another reason - GT3's leading cars currently trade lap times pretty well with those in the class above. Wouldn't it be confusing to see the same base-model of Corvette, Porsche, Ferrari and possibly Viper in two different classes at the same time, though?

This is definitely a confusing statement. The Porsche won the championship for Sean Edwards last year, I wouldn't call it "lesser". If anything, the Maserati would be a candidate for GT4.

Just ask the guys racing in the EERC about cars looking the same but in different classes ! They are having a tough time trying to sort any kind of playing field let alone a level one!

Sorry what I meant by lesser, was less powerful versions of GT3 cars such as the base Carrera and the 6.0 Corvette.

GT3 - Porsche GT3, Corvette Z06.
GT4 - Porsche Carrera or Cayman, Corvette C6.
