McLaren's latest innovation

Great new innovation by the Macs....curved edges on both sides of the rear wing elements. That's what i love most about formula1, teams like McLaren and Ferrari always trying and coming out with new ideas.

Last year...one of the most significant was Ferrari's periscope sgape exhaust exits that nearly all except for Sauber and the Macs didn't adopt. Those designs would add to more downforce and would make a difference on high downforce circuits like Melbourne.

But the Macs have an even better solution...not wanting to copy the Ferraris, with the new shape of those rear wings...a more concentrated and condensed flow of air which significantly contributes to more level of downforce generated.

I can't find a better of close up picture of the rear wing...

Yeah, nice wings, I noticed that. I can't wait to see the MP4/18.

From memory, the BARs had them too. Or at least the wing that Crompton showed during one of the pit-pass segments did.

No Jukes. They had a wing similar to the Mac wing last weekend in Melbourne.

Nope...not the same, may looked like it but it's because of the placed small plane infront.

Very similar. Same idea but with the addition of the BAR "endplate slot".

I am really, really excited about the coming season in terms of McLaren's prospects for glory. And I have been since the middle of winter testing. My pick was Kimi to win the first race as early as December, and well, nearly....
No more Ferrari domination I think. It's finally come to an end and now we are in for an exciting season to say the very least!!

GO KIMI
GO McLAREN

McLaren look to be very strong this year. The new car is supposed to be very innovative. Maybe those rear wings are a preview of whats to come...
Also, I just read that the new engine in the MP4-18 makes 930hp.(F1live.com) WOW!!

I wonder how long it would take before the HP's of the N/A 3.0 engines will match the Turbo 1.5 ones (1400 BHP in Quali trim!)

3-4 years perhaps?

I think a lot more than 3-4 years. In the last 3-4 years they haven't gained 200bhp. The Renault had approximately 750bhp in 1995.

That's 180bhp in 8 or 9 years. 1400bhp is still a couple of decades off! and, of course, it si diminishing returns until someone comes up with that next new idea (if it is out there and allowed by the rules!)

I dont think a NA motor will ever reach the 1400 hp level with the rules now in place. The revs would have to be at a ridiculous level and nothing in F1 now allows that.

930hp that is insane. Especially considering they were thought to be underpowered last year.

Wasn't there a team that cut a gap in the end plate just in front of the rear element last year? (and IIRC another tried just behind an element too). Hmmm. Can't remember at the moment.

I thought that the periscopic exhaustpipes were introduced by McLaren in '00-'01?
I think i remember a Belgian commentator saying that that was the reason why those Mclaren's had that high pitched scream coming from the exhausts

Periscope exhausts were introduced by Ferrari. McClaren liked the ones that exited behind the car aiding the diffuser - it gave the car more downforce (although the downside was that the amount of downforce was dependent upon the amount of throttle).

The high pitched sound is created because the length/shape and general design of the McClaren exhuasts causes the exhaust air to go supersonic.

Ferrari introduced periscope exhausts at the Spanish GP in 1999.

Hmmm, this might be just down to some resonance at the exit point. Not sure.
