Toyota's 'B spec' F1 car,
Toyota can't wait for 'B spec' F1 car,
Technical director Mike Gascoyne said the debut of a 'B spec' model is on course for next-race Hockenheim. Will they be any closer to ferrari and what will this do for Williams and McLaren ??? Does anyone know whats going on there? |

Close to Ferrari? This year? Very funny. Williams and McLaren are safe for now too - but Sauber and Jaguar are in serious trouble.

Toyota are planning a BAR style assault on the big boys at some point but when that will be i guess is still quite a way off

Every team wants to play with the big boys - I'm sure Toyota wouldn't mind if it were next week, but to be realistic they should expect something similar to BAR's experience - full of hope and expectation to start with, then five long years of struggle, then the breakthrough. I'd reckon that it couldn't possibly be before 2006 when they could be at the stage that BAR are at now (even though their budget is just about the biggest out there).

Currently they're close enought o Sauber in the standings to know that the car won't have to be a huge improvement for them to be able to take 6th. The problem is that the top 5 teams have got reliability sorted, and Indy and Monaco probably represent the season's only 'oddity' races of lots of incidents, so they will ahve to be outpacing cars from the big 5 teams, at least on occasion, to get anything.
Planning ahead for 2005 really ought to be their main goal though. They don't need the extra money for finishing 6th, and will go into 2005 with their first fully-Gascoyne-designed car and surely their best driver lineup yet. |

Just because it's the "B-Spec" car doesn't necessarly mean it will be a McLaren-esk jump forward. It could be 1/10th a lap faster.
Remember that in their first year Renault were having their butts handed to them by Minardi. |

Assuming this a Gasgoyne B spec, then the results should be promising.

I am of the same inclination as Glen. I would place 2006 as the year when they will start getting it together properly, although it will not be a year of serious title contention - that will take a bit longer, me thinks.
In 2006? I would think regular decent points finishes, with some podiums (not REGULAR, as it were). I might well be proven utterly wrong, of course. |

Toyota may need to strengthen it's driver lineup in the mean time. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for Panis, and have been following daMatta since his CART days and know he's got some incredible skill. However, neither driver has really stood out at any point this season, and their performance has been quite average. Much of this mediocrity can be attributed to the car, I suppose. Maybe Ralf will help this situation, maybe he won't.

The B spec which is an evo of the A should be faster but not that much to come close to the top cars, Imo...I think a complete Gascoyne car who can fight for wins can only come out the production line to race next season...although they need a very good blend of drivers to help them through the top...a good blend could be a young fast and agressive charger, and two experienced support and testing drivers...
But as always, I might be wrong... |
