Just thinking ahead here Baub but you'd better make sure you get yourself out and about a lot with your Box Brownie again this year, we will expect similar entertainment after the end of this coming season too! (Having said that, if you posted the same old pictures again probably none of us would remember anyway!)

Probably a bit boring, but I tend to photograph stuff I like, as I don't often have to please anyone else.

I love those too. There's nothing on earth like an Aston a very unique mix of sport and chic. And in Zagato dress…*

Almost as good looking as a Pininfarina designed Scaglietti built 250SWB! (I think both cars are stunning....)

Now that is a good looking car the Scaglietti. But then again there are plenty of other good looking ones like the Jaguars for example

Most Jags, I agree. But certainly not that XJ220 monstrosity. Also, I always thought the XJS an awful replacement for the E Type. What were they thinking? |

Bauble here's a question. You've taken thousands of fabulous photographs which has given you immense pleasure. What do you do with them now? Do you ever sit down flicking through your virtual album, or do they just sit there until they're handy for useful research like this thread?
I'm interested because I am not a great photographer either in skill or interest. Recently we were de-cluttering for an aborted house move and I discovered all my photo albums. They'd been in the loft since we moved here 20 years ago, before that they'd been in our previous loft ten years and in my parents' loft for lord knows how long before that. I don't know what to do with them, they're just ephemera. So what do you all do with your photos? Keep them because, like me, there's a nagging feeling (a.k.a. the current Mrs MM) that I "must" or delete them/throw them away. I have to admit I don't even look at the auto backed up pictures from my phone on my Google account. What to do? Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk |

MM, to some extent it would depend on what the subjects are of your photos. Are they family, racing, historical, irreplaceable?
For myself while every photograph is unique in itself, I doubt I have any that are 'rare' after all I am never the only person taking snaps at any event, so while interesting there are similar images available and probably recorded somewhere.by professionals. Like many families we have a number of old black and white pictures left over from previous generations, amateur, Box Brownie type of thing, and mostly unidentified as to subject; "I think that might be great uncle Bert, at Clacton." Maybe in the future they might be worth a fortune to collectors, but other than a mild curiosity of little use or value to us today. There are a number of people selling old motor sport pictures and at jaw dropping prices, so you could be sitting on a kings ransom. At my advanced years, I have started to dispose of many things 'I would never throw away', simply because I see a skip full of 'treasures' (ie Dads old junk) disappearing towards the town dump on my demise. Yes! I understand your dilemma, it will probably resolve itself when you get really old like me. I would be interested in your final decision. |

One of the more interesting aspects of old photos (and also lofts) is that the contents only become really interesting at some point after those that may cherish them have departed.
Or maybe "seem" to have a value - usually sentimental, sometimes a cash value. Once in a while a passing interest from offspring or further down the hereditary line for a brief period of interest. With photos from the pre-digital ages some of the grainiest and least sharp images become interesting to a few people simply because they are rare and will become rarer as the years an the people of those time pass. The best "official" images of the time will be in pay-for collections, probably all copyright to an organisation that only sees them as potential cash generating assets that have minimal storage costs once part of the collection. Especially if they have been digitised. The beauty of a photo is that it is, potentially, a reference point in one's life that only takes a few seconds to revisit when it's in one's hand. The memory refresh will likely last for years. It does not need to be re-visited frequently but at what point can it be discarded? And if not discarded then they are probably best stored away from sunlight and the worst effects of everyday in house chemical pollution. Bring them out once in a while and enjoy them for what they are. What people choose to do with them after on has departed are of little consequence. Maybe the ancient concept of a funeral pyre where the departed was disposed of along with all of their portable worldly possessions to accompany them on the journey made a lot of sense at the time. The only difference in terms of photo images and associated later life nostalgia is that back in the days of film there were fewer people taking pictures and mostly they took fewer pictures. The mass market also took a lot of truly poor quality colour pictures using truly poor "cameras" and tiny negatives. Nonetheless the modern era's lack or rarity or uniqueness (for almost any subject) makes me wonder how people will come to reminisce in the future. It will be very easy to dump a digital photo or video collection without even knowing one has done it. Video, for those who are into it, probably offers greater challenges for accessibility and those odd moments of real interest. |

As there appears to be a number of viewers who just like nice old cars I shall continue posting them. I am happy that they are appreciated. Thank you all.

They both sold about the same number of cars although the production run for the XJS was 6 years longer. That said the global economy was perhaps a bit more "new growth" oriented during the E-Type period than the XJS period. By comparison with today's offerings at least both of the designs were easily recognisable and unique. |
