Marshals From The Past
Just like to start a thread kinda saying thank you to all the past marshals I used to know who may still be working, may not, may not even be still with us but have have been a very important part of my marshalling life. So I would just like to hello (as I know he is still about and writes letters to Motorsport) to Fergie Whatling, hope to see you at Goodwood my friend. Also a hello to Barry Jaggard who in the mid seventies was Chief Marshal at Snetts and also to Tom Hurn X-Obs who intially got me involved.
Also I better sat hello to Martin Shalders whom I still marshal with, who has been marshlling for nearly 40 years going back to Crystal Palace and is a complete 'mincer' god bless you. Would like to hear from fellow ten-tenthers about those who have been very important to you. -- Balders |

That's a vote for Richard from me too. Also Eric Figgit (RIP) who was one of the most entertaining people you could spend a day with, and with whom I spent my first day as a marshal: "You can't see methanol burning, but you'll know if it is because your wellies will melt!"

I recall Bill Rucke -Keen of AMOC fame and Peter Cunnell...both observers of "the old school" ie gents, calm, collected and able to delegate efficiently.
Mick Cooke for whom I was assistant observer for the first time at Post 6 at Brands back in the 60s ( much running down hill). Alan Privett....Jim Keenen ( you are alive, i have spoken to you this year!), Terry Jolly (of Teasmaid fame) and the fabled Fergus von Whatling. As Balders so rightly says, friendships tested in the fire of battle last longest. And 8 to 6 on a windswept bank can seem a very long day in the wrong company! Thats not 'mincing', thats deportment........... |

Fred Matthews, yes....always looked miserable , but then most scrutes do! And who was the BRSCC chief flags for a long while at Brands? Always perky.
Peter Balls ( and his manager/wife) from start line at Silverstone ; and 'Silverstone Sid Herbert'...where are they now? Characters both! |

I remember good days with Richard Twist at Prescott,
but what about his chum Ray Wass, he was another good sort who dissapeared. From racing do not forget Bill Wotton one of the best observers I ever workewith. |

Silverstone Syd - nice to see you here. Welcome to 10/10ths!
I recall some meetings were the 'Phil Morom' memorial meeting, were they BMRMC meetings? |

Bert Lamkin died early 1980s, after which 'Big John' Winter paid for a special award to be presented to the BRSCC member doing the most publicly to promote the name and interests of the Club. I'm proud to say I was awarded it in 1987.

Alan Inman I recall! Great character. Made us " row" 4 straw bales on the edge of the track for a Stewards Inspection at Dingle Dell once! We capsized but no injuries..........
