Best BTCC Driver Since 2001?

Well, we've got the negative side of things with a worst driver topic, so I thought it was high time that we had a best driver topic as well
So, who would you like to suggest? The obvious is to say the Championship winners, but do you think there's anyone who deserves a mention for one or two stunning races. Over to you

I think that Warren Hughes is worth a mention, he's driven well for MG, but then you can't ignore the Vauxhall drivers, Thommo and Muller have been at the front in nearly all the races, yeah, they had better cars, but they've been impressive. However, my vote goes to...

Several:

Anthony Reid and Warren Hughes
Andy Priaulx - what a star!
Paul o'Neill
James Kaye

And probably a whole load more!

Sorry - just as the 'worst driver' topic is flawed so is this... define best. Is it the driver with the most success ? The best newcomer ? The fan's favourite ? Each of these questions will present a different answer.

getting technical here! I think the best progress would be a good measure, but what is progress!?? its a slipery slope!

but i would say that whatever we define as best, Warren Hughes, Andy Priaulx would be on the short list!

Yes, indeed. I like Warren a lot as a driver but I think that Andy edges it as best newcomer/progress.

The MG pairing, the only drivers to really challenge Vauxhall till Priaulx came good.

My vote would be Thompson, but its difficult to do this as so many of the best drivers were only racing in 2001 (people like Erdos and Harrison) or 2002 (Priaulx and Reid)

Since he only did one or two races but I thought he excelled each time in a pretty poor car, I'd have to suggest Peter Cate.

Yeah so I'm biased but there's not many drivers who get called up to drive for a midfield team and then lead the race straight out of the box.

He grabbed a podium at Mondello and one at Thruxton last year from only three events - someone give the guy a chance!

Thompson would have to get my vote. He's done extremly well both years and has got what he deserved - The championship.

Yvan Muller was the man, but heartbroken for not winning two titles because of bad circumstances. If Jason Plato ever comesback to the BTCC. I hope Muller will give him some payback for his punting a couple of years ago.

Me too. Plato DID NOT deserve his title. Muller did. Although I'm delighted that Thommo won this year, poor Muller deserves at least 1 title from the past 2 years. If JP does return I will offer to aid Muller in getting revenge.

Best since 2001? Muller/Thompson but I think Priaulx deserves a mention!

Now that I look at this I think that Muller and Thompson are really the guys to beat in the BTCC. Anthony Reid, too, in a good car is one guy not to mess with. I also think James Kaye and Gavin Pyper are the best in the production class.

Priaulx was quick but he's going to the ETCC, so we won't see him anymore.

Priaulx would be my candidate. He was much faster than his teammate. It's a shame that he is leaving for ETCC. Honda was dealt a blow IMO when he left.

Roger Moen.

Stunning in production in 01, after an abysmal 98 in his privateer Honda Accord.

Thommo also. The way he qualified a car with full ballast and used his racecraft to defeat Muller was truly exceptional this year.

Steve Soper, driver of 2001 in a car that wasnt up to speed, unlucky to be taken out by a silly Vauxhall driver day in day out. If only he was in that Peugeot this yr, he might had taken a few wins.
Anyway, does anyone know whats happened to him, is he now doing a Murrey Walker and watching it on the gd old TV or is he bac in sportscars or something?

I think he has retired from racing after substaining a back injury from his heavy shunt at brands Hatch in the 2001 BTCC final

Anthony Reid, Warren Hughes, Andy Priaulx and Paul O'Neil, with Paul making perhaps the biggest stride forward as a driver, he has made so much progress since driving MGFs and the pug in the BTCP class!
