2008 Tech Regs ammended

They have been ammended...or messed about with, depending on your point of view.Grey crossed out stuff has been thrown out, pink stuff is what they've agreed upon.Smaller brake discs are on the cards, but they've gone less radical on the wheels.

Barberouge has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
The majority of the proposed changes for 2008 - aero, tyres and kinetic energy recovery have been postponed to 2009.

The only major change for 2008 is the 4 race gearbox.

Yes I read that, but then if thats the case surely they can't keep the grooved tyres?

Even A1GP cars can wheel spin with about 550bhp so F1 cars with 750bhp would certainly need Slick tyres.

Traction Control Banned from 2008

Quote:
Traction control has been banned from Formula One from the start of next year in a move supported by all teams and rubber-stamped by the FIA.

A meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council earlier this week approved a number of changes to the 2008 F1 Technical Regulations - the most significant of which appears to be a complete ban on traction control.

Article 9.3 of the newly amended rules states: "No car may be equipped with a system or device which is capable of preventing the driven wheels from spinning under power or of compensating for excessive throttle demand by the driver.

"Any device or system which notifies the driver of the onset of wheel spin is not permitted."

Traction control returned to F1 in 2001 following years of suspicion in the sport that some teams were running clever engine management systems to get around a ban that existed at the time.

It was felt that with it was virtually impossible to guarantee that teams were not running such systems, so the teams agreed the only way forward was to free up the regulations.

However, the move to a standard ECU in 2008 means that it will be easier for the FIA to police engine management systems – and it is believed that this has been the catalyst for engineering such a major rule change.
Hurrah!

No TC excellent.

But what is this? They have gone back on the slicks and wider cars ideas!

*sigh*

But is all this just holding back the wider cars until 2009?

It seems that maybe the teams needed more time to prepare their new designs.

I have to say though, that the current cars would be more suited to these new Street circuits that are coming along. Wide cars will struggle down the relatively narrow city streets.

Some rely on TC more than others. For example,Barrichello thought that Honda's was non-existent because Button hadn't really bothered with it much!

My heart sank... no slicks and wide cars for 2008?

Can I ask why?

Does the FIA not care about the state of its "racing"?

Could be something to do with the customer chassis side of things.Prodrive could end up with a really fast car while everyone else is still trying to sort theirs out.

Thinking about it a bit more, I suppose the idea is that by keeping the current levels of aero the cars won't need anymore Mechanical grip.

But I think it's a risky strategy, if in the first few races we have some big accidents then the FIA will have to take a second look. Maybe a better idea is to reduce the amount of Grooves from 4 to 3?

This is a move in the right direction at least. I've always considered the most interesting traction control device to be the dudes battling for the WDC and now they'll get to prove it again.

I just hope the FIA can really police it like they think they can.

I'm not sure whether the ban on traction control is enough. As far as I know, electronic differentials and throttles will stay. And these devices are key components of traction control.
