Britcar 24 hrs, kit needed while on post

right following on from the thread about hi-vis gear which we all carry anyway, what other kit will be handy while out on post. here is what i am thinking

headtorch
warm hat
extra fleece/bodywarmer as it will be cold during the night

for during your downtime

basic doss kit, either small tent or bivvy bag with usual sleeping kit and earplugs
brewkit, small gas stove and something to boil water in
are we kept going in food or do we have to bring out own??

the veterans can add to this thread

Alarm clock
Waterproofs & tarp/brolly to keep stuff dry
Gaffer tape and guy lines to attach the lighting stick to the fencing

after doin a few of these i have got used to the kit, this year may be diff as it is a lot later,

spare everything if you have it for a start, water proofs, overalls, boots, gloves, big socks, wooley hats, clothes. will be cold and more than likely raining.
cooker to make hot water for coffe, tea. loads of food, more high energy snacks really, loads of water, pop and energy drinks
head light and batteries
also a radio is vital, you can listen to the commentary all night and it really keeps you upto date and awake

Notebook and pens. If you're flagging you may very well be "Observer" as well.
Sunglasses. to stop you being blinded by the lights.

Those yellow night driving ones are probably the best as they do give give protection from the glare aswell as improving visability.

if you do have to cover for an observer do not panic as numbers are not clear at night and contact is very difficult to see,

take plenty of warm clothes as it will get cold through the night especially as this year it is October

you will find the toilets are open, so always within walking distance.

meals in a tin, we done this at the recent F1,
found it quick & easy to do, 5 - 10 mins to heat up.
steak & kidney, mince beef, peas carrots, smash (forgot how good that tasted) topped off with gravy.
But dont forget you are supplied with meal tickets over the weekend.

Most posts have toilets nearby. Though we did find that on Maggots they were a bit of a hike in the dark, so just hopped in the car and drove there.

We call that "pot mess" in the forces! Tastes bloody gorgeous after a long day on your feet! Except we used tinned new potatoes not smash, its easier!

A bit over the top, perhaps, but it may be helpful to beg, borrow or hire a small motorhome as this provides rest, decent cooking/ fridge facilities & a dry area to change & to keep spare kit if necessary.

PM me if anyone wants details of where they might be available.

Now that does sound like a cracking idea. I may even make my own up before hand, ready to put into my mess tins and chuck on the stove behind the post.

I think we'll be needing more warm foodstuffs and drinks this time. Could be a cool one.

My only advice really is go through all the tips and items already mentioned and bring the lot. Better to have it all with you than wishing you'd taken that spare coat, tin of beans or sunglasses

As has been said by Red08 if you think you may need it, take it, you can always take it home again, but if its at home then its no use at all!

Yes, ex WAFU Tiff & Seaman Officer. That combination of careers doesn't usually score me any points, though!

:
the only thing you have to be careful if it is hot during the day and the food is not kept cool, that's why we chose the tins.
the other alternative is to freeze it, a few ice blocks and a cool bag.

when we done it in 2008 we set our Gazebo up on post, a table and a 2 ring camp cooker.
we left it on post from the start of the sat morning right thru to the end of the race on the Sunday.
A few on here who were on post with us, quite enjoyed the 5 am Bacon Butties & Coffee the wifey done.

That's a good point mate yeah. I was thinking of bringing one of those cool boxes that you can top up on a car charger. Well worth thinking in advance though.
