Montreal's GP: why it's so much fun for spectators, drivers, teams

I read an article today on Canada.com about Montreal's upcoming Grand Prix du Canada that stated "This city is always one of the favourite stops on the F1 calendar for the drivers and their teams, who generally adore the three Ms -- Melbourne, Monaco and Montreal."

Perhaps more importantly Montreal is a favorite F1 venue for any fan who has ever been to a race there. As I head off to my 8th Montreal F1 race (and 7th in a row), here are a few thoughts (and links) about what makes Montreal such a great race to attend.

Like Melbourne and Monaco, and unlike most other F1 venues, the Montreal track is very conveniently located right next to a center city area. Fans take a 5 minute metro ride to the track and then return to their hotels, most of which are located in or near downtown. This arrangement allows the city to become one vast F1 party zone for the four days of the race weekend. Here are some of the events going on during this year's race:

Canadian GP Festival on Crescent St.

Crescent St. is one of the city's main bar and restaurant districts. The street is closed to traffic for two blocks during 3 days of exhibits, bands, souvenir-selling, etc.

BMW Sauber F1 Team Pit Lane Park in downtown Montreal

BMW's new pit lane park will be set up for 3 days right in the downtown area not far from Crescent St. In the past BMW has sponsored an "M night" festival downtown, featuring car displays, driver introductions and a fashion show.

Festival Mode & Design

Montreal has an active fashion industry and it takes advantage of the city hosting a big international sports event by putting on several days' of public fashion shows on outdoor stages in the downtown area. Not interested in fashion shows, you say? Look below and think again.

Ferrari Club of Quebec

Revving up for Grand Prix weekend

Peel St., also just a few blocks from Crescent, becomes the city's temporary car show venue for four days:

Peel St. parade of cars

Thursday: 40 Ferraris arrive under police escort at 5:30 p.m. and will be on display till midnight.

Friday: Lamborghinis are on display from 5:30 p.m. to midnight.

Saturday: North America Ferrari Club, with vintage and new cars, 5:30 p.m. to midnight.

Sunday: Quebec Porsche Club, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Bridgestone open house day

Bridestone sponsors a free open house day at the track on Thursday when anyone can walk through the pit area and view the teams preparing for the race (some teams are more cooperative than others).

Those are just some of the special events going on. Montreal also offers great bars and restaurants, great summer weather (usually), great girl watching (always) and an overall atmosphere of F1 fun that anyone can enjoy without even going to the track.

Should be a real blast this year - JeanBaptiste Day celebrations too! Just heard last night that apparently Madonna's around there too.

I went outside for a quick sandwich. The fashion show on McGill College was pretty good actually. The streets are full of people and I did not even walk up to Crescent Street where JV's Newtown restaurant and other f1 attractions are located. The f1 fever is on.

I was wondering what the fashion is in Montreal this year, but only got reports about Madonna being in Town, the price of gas, and the crowds expected for the Grand Prix from a friend who just returned from Quebec City and through Montreal.
Sounds like it'll be a great time and I'll sure be the sorry one if I miss it -- no matter what the price of gas is! I have a pre-kinder/maternelle graduation for my littlest girl Friday afternoon -- but if I can possibly talk my friend into the drive, I'd sure love to go see Jacques on Sunday at the Grand Prix!
Please keep us posted here all that you can Louis B!

Thks Okeefe,

I had in mind starting a thread I would have entitled "live from Mtl" but work and other commitments are also making me miss most of the action. It's a bit of shame as this week is really the one to be in Mtl (even for the non-f1 fan).
Anyhow, I am thankful to BobHWS who started this thread.

What else could I add based upon what I have seen? Here are a few:

1. JV's press conference at a local BMW dealer: JV was excellent. He is so much better when he is interviewed in French. He is less natural when he turns to English. I doubt very much about his future with BMW but they, for sure, are getting a lot for their money in terms of visibility and promotion here in Mtl. As I write these lines he is at the BMW station downtown and is supposed to make a demo with the car they have there.

2. Trulli's promotion of his wine in a local liquor store;

3. The launch of Christian Tortora's book about f1 at the Newtown restaurant. Indy will be the journalist's 500th GP. You might have seen him on a famous photograph in which he was holding little Jacques' hand at Gilles' funerals.

4. The teams too enjoy the venue. A couple of years, ago a Ferrari mechanics was quoted as having declared that Montreal had the best strip bars of all the cities visited by f1 GP. I, obviously, cannot comment as to whether this is true or not.

In tomorrow's report if I find the time for it:

How is it to attend a GP with a five year old boy?

Montreal Live

It's been a great day in Montreal. The weather started out cloudy but at around noon the sun came out and it stayed hot and muggy until an evening shower arrived too cool things off at around 7:45.

The highlights so far:

The F1 babes, bien sur! Photos in a week or so.

BMW's Pit Lane Park is a fantastic show. I was a bit skeptical, but I wandered over there and wound up staying for about 3 hours. The highlights were the demos of the new F8 BMW motorcycle by world champion stunt rider Pfieffer (forgot his first name). Later I saw a demo of the BMW F1 car by one of their test drivers (sorry forgot his name now, but an English guy, I think). Great burnouts and donuts. Lots of great photo opportunities. I'll post my photos when I get home.

The fashion shows on McGill Ave.

Somebody mentioned strip bars? Moi, j'en sais rien.

Crescent St. as lively as ever and the crowd control is better than in the past.

Weather looks good for Friday and Saturday, with a chance of thunderstorms for Sunday.

I am heading for Crescent street now just to get in the mood.

I will be at the track tomorrow. I will be sitting in stands no. 21 in the Senna esses (after the starting line just in front the pit exit). If anyone of you gets there and see a tall & handsome guy arguing with his 5 years old son about the necessity to wear hear plugs, it might be me.

Ciao

Montreal Live cont.

Friday--another great day in Montreal. I actually skipped going to the track today, because frankly there is more happening downtown than at the track. The practice sessions just aren't very meaningful these days and I've seen enough of them in the past. But I'll be there all day Saturday and Sunday.

The weather today was partly cloudy/partly sunny with temps around 20-22 C. (72-75 or so F.) no rain, a little muggy. Outlook is great for Sat. chance of islolated storms Sunday. All in all a great today for the Bikini Village fashion show on McGill.

Last night Ferrari Club car arrived on Peel St. Tonight there is a mix of Lamborghini, Lotus and Ferrari road cars on display.

Erratum, Those are in fact stands no 12.

I spent most of this morning's session trying to fit ear plugs in my son's ears. I saw more of his ears than the show. He still found it too noisy and didn't want to see the afternoon session such that I went home and watched it on TV.

Takumato Sato made a beautiful spin just in front of us. The Michelin teams seemed the have the edge over the Michelin's today. Kubica was very impressive in the first session. It looks good for the combination BMW/Michelin. No1special's $20 will soon be mine.

Tomorow will be my 7 years old son's turn. This will be his second time at a GP such that, hopefully, I will see the qually live...
