Charly was a genuine, nice guy. He and his Schnitzer team raised the bar in the BTCC.

One of the great stalwarts of touring car racing. Rarely are there teams as successful as Schnitzer over such a long period of time. RIP, Charly.

Like Whizzo, his retirement didn’t last long. Massive respect for the way he had led Scnitzer, especially bringing it over to the British championship and winning it first time with Smoking Jo. Shock news

I was deeply saddened to receive the news yesterday concerning the passing of which.

I came to know him well during the 1993 BTCC season. I was covering the series for German-language publication Motorsport aktuell, so naturally I had to pay attention to BMW. I quickly formed a great working relationship with Charly & formed a deep respect for him. Despite always being busy, he always had time for you & would sometimes seek me out after a race to chat about whatever had happened.

Things moved on & in recent times our paths only crossed sporadically but there would always be a cheery greeting. He will be missed by many, not the least the very loyal team he built-up at Schnitzer.

RIP Charly, you will never be forgotten.

A massive surprise and a sad one at that.

So many years and so much success.

RIP.

I also had dealings with Charly during the '93 BTCC season. I was also involved with some of the other F1 based teams who were generally obstructive and unhelpful at times, not so Charly and Schnitzer who were an absolute delight to deal with (and were a better team). RIP a talented gentleman.

I remember reading about Charly over the years (1970's -80's) and following the BTCC later.
RIP Charly.
