The Race To Build a New #7

Back on the on-track stuff for a bit....

This article seems strange...

Why would KR build up a new chassis in 2 weeks, when there is already a spare unit in their shed?

At Bathurst for example, the car previously run in Dodo colours for Mr Perkins, was run as the 2nd Jack Daniels car for Mr Pretty & Mr Stig... why is that chassis not good enough to be claimed back?

Seems like a huge rush, a huge stress, and potential for reliability issues....

anthony81901 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
At the beginning of the year the Kelly website stated Todd was using PE049, Rick PE048, Perkins PE047 and Wood (and later McNally) PE046. I presume PE048 was the 7 car in the enduros as it had the rear axle and wing cameras. I thought PE045 had last been used by Todd at Hamilton in 2008, perhaps not so. Agree even if it was in pieces, would have been quicker to reactivate the spare.

If you had seen the Bet 24/7 ads, there are 2 white VE's in that ad in full signage. Presumably that is Mr Perkins' current #047, and the #045 spare.

The #045 was used at Bathurst and Indy in Bet 24/7 colours... with Mr Perkins reverting to #047 after that...

Dont recall that it took a hit.. so preparation of that car for Mr Perkins to use, and to resticker the #047 to use for Mr T.Kelly should have been straight forward

All I really see here is cash burn

1200Datto27 has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I do not read anywhere in that article that they are building up a new car from a bare shell, I read it, especially the comments directly from Todd, that they are getting the spare car ready, but that it is in need of some work and theyonly have a limited time to do the work.

Quote:
If that is the case then we will be able to pull the whole undercarriage from the car and put it into the spare

I thought of Stealthy when I read this bit

While inside the Kelly Racing Team bunker we discovered that while this car may have a Holden badge on the front grill - it is no Commodore.

Not even close

On V8Xtra Noonz indicated that the team was transferring the components of #7 to a spare car...and he would know. Perhaps the team has been happy to run with the story of a new car being built, if nothing else it has gained plenty of publicity for the team that preparing a spare would not have.

So does this prompt another question, about #7 and #15 being different from #16 and #11/#247?

Does this explain the performance gulf?

That could have something to do with the pilot of said cars...

Perkins is an OK steerer, but he's no Perkins!

neil crompton said at one point in the last round that rick was driving the car he drove last year ?

i think it was when he was talking about qualifying times being down on last year

Rick was driving a Walkinshaw built car last year, so we can rule that out.

this is also interesting

"About 3m of metal tubing is then put together like a giant jigsaw and welded into place to form the base of the car."

3m usually means meters ! I wonder if they left a 0 OFF!

Could they have had a new chassis nearly completed ready to start using next year?

It would seem easier to do as GTR suggest with Jack to drive the old spec spare, but they must have reasons for what they are doing.
