Circuit Cameras

Well the circuit cameras were used for the first time at Mondello last weekend and it's an interesting experience.

Personally I was very concerned that the cameras would lead to a high degree of "remote marshalling" with marshals being over-ruled at every turn - but I didn't see any of that this time around (there's time of course....)

What I did see was a huge improvement in the level of driving standards reports being actioned - and actioned with meaningful penalties. There may be hope for Irish motorsport yet!

I believe most, if not all, of the circuits in the UK have camera systems? Does anyone remember them going in? Have you any advice/comments you can offer on how well the systems are used and what we can expect going forward?

ianpearson should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I have seen the spare display screens at silverstone being used to display womens swimming. Of course when i pointed out to the official my disapproval of the screens use, it did'nt reduce my penalty.

Hi EP,

Thruxton definitely does NOT have CCTV at all.

It will be interesting to see if the improvement continues, once the system loses it's "new-ness!"

Cheers

Silverstone - yes
Donington - yes
Mallory - one only at the hairpin
Anglesey - no
Oulton - no
Pembrey - no
Thruxton - no

I won't observe at a circuit with cameras (and dislike the hairpin at Mallory for that reason).

If they have cameras, Race Control will always interfere. They can't help it and no-one could expect them not to.

So Oulton is my favourite place for observing and I will regret the day when it gets cameras.

Regards

Jim

Ooooh Jim - your 666th post

When you say Race Control will interfere, what do you mean? Interfere with the reports, the running of the post.....?

I could be wrong here, but what Jim may be inferring is that when an observer makes a request for a red flag stoppage, if it's anything other than absolute carnage, then race control will take a look at the situation on the cameras before making an absolute decision. They just can't help it, the monitor's there and it's only human to look first.
Kind of devalues the man on the grounds judgement.

As for making a difference to driving standards by following cars on track - that I seriously doubt.

so,adding to Jim's list
Brands Hatch - cameras

One of which was closely trained on me at post 24's Porsche incident at the weekend, still seemed to take a long time for those reds to come out, but then does'nt it always when you're at a biggie.

Additionally, though, any circuit hosting a BTCC meeting will have 'camera' status since Race Control will get access to the live feed from all of the TV cameras - for all races. Probably much clearer than the existing circuit cameras as well (i.e. in colour!)
