Noise
I've just returned from a frustrating round of the Caterham Eurocup at Zandvoort. We arrived at the circuit on Thursday as free practice, qualifying and race one were on the friday. As luck would have it the circuit allowed the foreign competitors to buy an extra half hour track time before the free practice (very thoughtful). Within two laps we were black flagged. I walked up to the stewards to find out why....102db, the circuit drive-by limit set by the local council was 93db. In free practice all the superlight Caterhams were black flagged for noise except us as our driver Malcolm Cook kept as far away from the meter as possible and lifted as he passed it.
How can a circuit hold a round of an international series when the noise limit would not allow the cars to race notwithstanding the fact that all the cars have controlled engines and exhuast systems (in the Eurocup the superlights have to use a catalyst as well as the standard exhust/silencer) With thanks to the guys at Caterham a quick fix was devised and tested. All the superlights had to have corrigated cardboard taped over the bonnet cut-out for the induction system. The noise was coming from the intake, not the exhaust. We were assured by Minister that it modification would not harm the engines. The problem of noise is not going to go away. Has anyone else come upon this problem? In the end we managed to get both rounds in without further problems...just as well as it would have been mighty interesting to see a grid full of screeming Caterhams racing down the start finish straight and all lifting as they went by the noise meter!!! |

Re: Noise
As I understand it there is no MSA limit for drive-by. Thus, while the circuits pull you in unless you fail a static test at 3/4 rpm they have no right to do so again.
Obviously Zandvoort presumably not being controlled by MSA has complications, but I'd have still argued the toss and threatened action. The RX7 is obviously a noisy car, so I'm fairly regularly having to go through the rigmarole here. They pulled me at Croft on a drive by, so I delivered my - rotary engine - MSA blue book regs - awkward git speech and fortunately the deal was done. The real irony is when they fail someone at Brands when the BOSS cars are on in 1/2 an hour.. Stacy |
