Unusual racing

Just a question from a non-marshal. What has been the most unusual or exciting race you have ever marshaled at? If I became a marshal when I'm older, I wouldn't mind seeing shopping trolleys powered by carbon dioxide fire extinguishers race. It looks like great fun and is pretty eco-friendly.

Why are you not marshalling now? At Oulton Park you can start in the assembly area at your age?!!!!!!

I'm not marshalling now because I intend to start once I know whether or not I will be able to drive, for ease of transport. What use will I be if I cannot be where I say I will when I say I will. Plus I don't think my parents wanna be taking me to all these far away places.

ferrarifanatic, put where you live and another marshal might live close by and be willing to give you a lift.

I live in Stoke. But I'm not totally sure it is something I want to do yet. I'm thinking about F1 journalism, so if you know anyone involved in it please let me know.

I have done a few unusually (ecomarathon/Formule Student/green power enduro)events but nothing like that.
I have, however, been to local A & E with my kids with similar incidents.
1. Injured when in a supermarket trolley travelling at 30mph and hitting a lorry.
2 At 30mph, hit another trolley coming the other direction at the same speed.

They get a tow from a motorbike and then just let go???

He's now a traxi driver .. so thats where the nutcases go.

Aah, so trying my theory out in the local Tesco carpark might not be such a great plan? Well, I have to go cancel my order for 2 carbon dioxide extinguishers then! Just joking, I may have had a few head injuries (See 'Daft things Marshals Do)but I wouldn't put myself at risk like that.

For something a bit different, you can't beat Lawnmower Racing. Checkout the NWLMRA website (PM me if you have problems) as I think some of their drivers live your way. A lot of them head South for the Annual 12 hour race.
Its also a good way to go and practise your reporting skills as you don't need media passes.

I can understand lawnmover racing. We used to have a ride on mower. I drove it several times and it rocked! Except for the time I rode it into a gulley at the side of the lawn and had to reverse!

My Mower is an extra strong endurance spec machine so it will just about hit 50mph. The lighter Championship Mowers are even quicker. I'll leave it to your imagination as to what happens when you get it even a little bit wrong...

You want to meet up with ascarracinguk FF He lives in Stoke and he is building a dragster! He also likes Roundy Round racing where they only turn left.

The most unusual race has to be from Mallory Park about 7 years ago for solar/alternative powered vehicles. I think it was called the FIA electro-solar challenge or something.

It was unusual in that they only managed 5 or 6 laps in fifteen minutes. It also rates as number one in my 'most boring' and 'most pointless' race categories.

The most exciting, for me, has to be the Toca Shootout in 1993. The atmosphere over the whole weekend was buzzing.

I know someone who lives in Congleton who's into R/C racing. No idea if there's a local venue though...

ARE there any marshals at R/C races?! maybe to split up the drivers if they take each other off and get in a fight?

Do they have marshals in powerboat races? The thought just popped into my head...

FF they certainly do, they use semi inflatables and flat bottom boats called Dorey's. Some of which can drop the fronts to pick up racers who have come a cropper. Most boats also carry a diver.
The Late Colin Chapman became involved in powerboat design when one of his children took up the sport. Needless to say it was the lightest boat in it's class.

Do people sometimes race on reversed circuits? You know, going backwards?

Eurocars used to race anti-clockwise on the Mallory Park oval as they were American stock-car lookalikes and so set up to run in the same way as the USA cars.
