Excellent weekend it sounds like. As always.

I will be there for my annual fix. Hope the decent weather is as well.

You can stick your GP, this is the best meeting of the year.

Any other 10-Tenthers going to be there?

A bit of the blurb from the VHRR website to back up and expand on David's opening post:
http://www.vhrr.com/phillip_island.htm
Quote:
The Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport from March 18-20 this year will again be paradise for car ‘perves’, with an entry approaching 500 vehicles – more than 30 from overseas – now certain for Australia’s largest historic circuit event.

And with special anniversaries being celebrated at the meeting for the Bathurst-winning Nissan GT-R (20 years), the XY Falcon GT HO (40 years), the Jaguar E-Type and the Mini (50 years) and the 60th anniversary of Porsche in Australia, there will be as much happening off the 4.55km Grand Prix circuit as on it over the weekend.

Standout vehicles from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart in this event include the eight-cylinder Porsche 908-02 that won the 1969 Targa Florio road race in Sicily and the Type 718 RS60 Spyder that won the 1960 Daytona 24-Hour race outright.

Other notable vehicles to be seen on track include a 1928 Alfa Romeo 6c, a 1929 Bugatti Type 37A Grand Prix car, a 1948 Talbot Lago monoposto, a 1963 Austin Healey ‘Sebring’, a 1965 Alfa Romeo TZ1 and a rare 1974 Lancia Stratos Group 4 coupe.

A highlight of the historic Formula Ford races will be the appearance of 23 year-old Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series star Tim Blanchard in his 1973 Van Diemen. Blanchard finished runner-up in the 2010 Fujitsu series and also picked up the covered Mike Kable Young Gun Award for the best rookie driver.
The combined Group C & Group A touring car field of more than 30 cars will see at least seven V8 Toranas take on five Commodores, two BMW M3s, a Jaguar XJS V12 and an ex-factory Nissan Skyline HR31, while the rival Fords include a 1988 Sierra RS 500 Cosworth, a Falcon XD and two Capri 3.0S – one driven by 1965 Bathurst winner ‘Bo’ Seton.

Meanwhile there’s a huge Historic Touring Car entry, with the Over 3.0-Litre cars including 14 Mustangs, nine Torana XU-1s, two Valiant Chargers and an XY Falcon GT HO, while the Under 3.0-Litre category is currently over-subscribed with a waiting list!

The most popular category of the meeting is again Production Sports Cars, with 105 already entered – around a quarter of the total racing cars at the meeting!

The Group Sa and Sb cars are again fully-subscribed, with a lone Shelby GT350, a Chevrolet Corvette and a Morgan Plus 8 taking on 12 MGs, nine Austin Healeys, eight Triumph TRs, four Porsches, a Lotus Elan and a Mercedes-Benz 190SL.

And in the always-popular Group Sc, at least 10 Porsche 911s will face three De Tomaso Panteras, three MGB V8s, three Ferraris, a Renault Alpine and a Corvette Stingray.

With the feature event of the meeting being the Sunday’s 30-minute race for big banger sports cars, the 2011 Phillip Island Classic features one of the strongest sports car fields seen for many years, with nine Lolas, six Porsches, two Elfins, a Sauber-Mercedes and a genuine Ford GT40 amongst the early entries.

Off the track, the hundreds of display vehicles include special cars from 32 clubs in the Shannons Walk, with 200 on display Saturday and 400 on the Sunday.

Meanwhile there will be another 80 special vehicles on show in the enclosed Expo Centre throughout the weekend, including the original Aston Martin DBS used by George Lazenby (aka James Bond) in the film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ and the Volvo P1800 driven by Roger Moore (aka Simon Templar), in the 1960s TV series, The Saint.

A record 22 trade stands will offer visitors a wide range of historic motoring items from books, memorabilia and badges to posters and unique clothing.
The 2011 Philip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport is organised by the Victorian Historic racing Register and will again be supported by Shannons, CoolDrive and Penrite.

I would like to be there, but my usual accommodation has fallen through, so I might not end up going Shame, as this is one of my "musts" each year.

Once again I'm hoping we can be down to cover it.
We're trying to find an external sponsor now to get some cameras down there for the weekend.
We have the support again of The All Seasons Resort so accommodation isn't the problem but we need the dollars to hire cameras.

Rare Museum Porsches headline 2011 PI Classic

Rare sports cars spanning six decades are heading from Germany’s Porsche Museum to the 2011 Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport from March 18-20 to celebrate Porsche’s 60th anniversary in Australia.

The headline act of the collection is the 935/78 coupe nick-named ‘Moby Dick’ by Porsche race mechanics because of its large and extended ‘whale tail’.

Based on a production 911 body shell to Group 5 regulations, Moby Dick was with climax of 935 race car development. Powered by a 621 kW (845 hp) turbocharged 3.2-litre six-cylinder development of the production 911 engine, it reached 366 km/h at Le Mans in 1978.

Perhaps the most recognisable of all Porsche racecars – the famous 956/962 which won the Le Mans 24 Hour seven times between 1982 and 1994 – is also part of the exclusive collection that will be seen at the Phillip Island Classic in March.

The car secured for Australia is the Rothmans 962 raced to victory in 1987 by Derek Bell, Hans Stuck and Al Holbert.

(935 78 Moby Dick M1)
The spectacular ’Moby Dick’ long-tail 935 Le Mans coupe is one of six Museum Porsches heading to the Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport on March 18-20.

(Iseki)
At least three Porsche 956/962 sports cars will be in the capacity sports car field in the 30-minute sports car feature race at this year’s Phillip Island Classic.

(962 Le Mans 1987 Stuck Bell Holbert V1)
This 1987 Le Mans-winning Porsche 962 is one of six special Porsches coming to Phillip Island from March 18-20 from the company’s famous Museum in Stuttgart.

(908 02)
The eight-cylinder Porsche 908-02 that won the 1969 Targa Florio road race will be one of six special Museum Porsches demonstrated at this year’s Phillip Island Classic from March 18-20.

(718 RS 60 1960)
The RS60 Spyder that won the 1960 Daytonas 24-Hour race is one of six special Museum Porsches demonstrated at this year’s Phillip Island Classic from March 18-20.

I will blame the omission on the VHRR, for I was just the messenger quoting from their press release James!

I wasn't complaining! Anyway I think I'm getting a small feature in the programme, so more than happy with the 'exposure' I'm getting!

Look forward to meeting you.

If we can make it we might try and catch up for an interview for In Pit Lane.
I'll definitely be there, as I said it's just a matter of finding someone to pay for the camera hire.

That would be great, look forward to meeting with you, and would very happily talk on camera. If i can get the new HD in-car camera all working then you'd be welcome (subject to authorisation from organisers) to any footage you deem usable - similarly Targa Tasmania.

Superb entry!

Just wondering where the R32's and other RS500's are that entered the main classic last season?

Would be great if the 2 TWR Vitesses could be tempted over from New Zealand at some point as well?

One R32 is driverless (Terry is O'seas) and the other is undergoing a full mechanical rebuild (as if it wasn't fast enough already) I don't think we're missing any Sierras are we? Robert Ingram is there as is Ross Donelly in the ex Tweedie's ex PJ car. The ex Damon Hill car that George Nittis owns is the only one MIA isn't it.
My tip for winners, Stapleton and Singleton.....unless it rains then look for any of the BMWs

The Labatt's RS500 is currently on the market, surprised it hasn't sold already. The ANZ RS500s are both owned by the same bloke, he's only running one at this meeting. None of the 6 DJR RS500s are actively competing these days. Two of the 4 Caltex RS500s are under restoration and will be competing soon.

PI Entry List

Good turn out in most categories. We're hoping to have Murray Carter in on In Pit Lane on the Tuesday leading up to the event to give it a plug.
Still working on getting a camera to film down there but it's not looking good at this stage.

3 x Maserati 250F

These cars alone make the trip to Phillip Island a must for me:
Jeffrey O'Neill USA 1957 Maserati 250F
Peter Giddings USA 1953 Maserati 250F
Tom Price USA 1956 Maserati 250F

Anyone know the history of the cars?
Here is the Peter Giddings car: http://petergiddings.com/Cars/250F.html

Shame the 250F over in WA didnt see the light of day.

Hi.

My first post here.

I'm very excited about the upcoming weekend. I have simple tastes, mainly Chargers! Plenty of other stuff if I can get the googles off for long enough!

ivision should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I'll be there nice and early both days with camera in hand! - shame I have to trip in back to Melbourne saturday night before returning to the Island sunday morning, but this event is so worth it! Cannot wait for what should be a fantastic weekend...see you all there!
