From the EXIF data on the full version link: 40mm 1/4 sec exposure
That's incredibly sharp for a long exposure handheld shot taken under pressure.

Superb. I like it because the driver and car are still but the mechanics around it are in motion. The opposite to how you would normally see a picture of a race car. The darkness also helps - Excellent!

Thanks to those who have had kind words to say about both my racing and non-racing photographs, whatever their reasons for liking them ...

Stefan. I've always admired several photographs from that gallery along with others of yours, still do.

Thanks for the nice comments about my photo. I hope I don't spoil it by telling the truth behind it.

It was taken the night before the race, during the teams pit stop rehearsals. The car didn't set off

Here's a particular favourite of mine from Cadwell Park's British Superbike round in August.

That's Red Bull Honda's Jonathan Rea getting some serious air over Cadwell's infamous Mountain section.

A lot of better pics already posted by others though. Hopefully I will get some better ones now I have upgraded from a Nikon D50 to a D200!

Great shots guidoh, stefan, davhut and owain!

Ray, are you going to the Britcar on 4th Nov at Donington? I'm just about to buy a new Canon and it will be my first event out with it. Looking forward to practicing during day and night sessions; I've got a lot to learn. Also, have you cropped your favourite shot in the post above?

All depends what your budget is

It your feeling pretty flush then a Canon EOS 1D Mk2 with 300mm F2.8 prime should sort you nicely Might set you back £5k+ though

Digital SLR would be recommended, can pick them up new for about £400.00 now. If would suggest checking out dpreview.com, most helpful.

As for my my own favourite photo I can't really say. I quite like this shot of Nigel Mansell...

Hi Racer-gal,

I'd be a bit wary of getting too wrapped up in equipment if you're starting out. At the end of the day if you spend £2k on a body it still doesn't guarantee you good results. You have to know what you're taking and how to take it more importantly than anything else.

Naturally there are aspects that you need to consider over and above your typical 5 megapixel "high street 'snappy' camera" or even camera-phone.

I've heard good reports on Nikon's D200 or Canon's comparable model. Not sure what your budget is, but check out the deals on the web as you can get excellent 'bundle' deals that include a zoom lens, flash etc too ( a zoom will be a minimum requirement for motorsport).

Hope this helps.

Guy

Hi. I am hoping to go to the Donington EERC event, but it depends on my work rota. If I do it will be my first EERC event with my new Nikon D200 which was delivered today. The pic wasn't cropped at all. Do you like it?

Ray.

Racer-gal, I have a Pentax ISTD-L, and its a fantastic, easy to use Digital SLR. it cost me about 1400 aussie dollars, which is about £500, but I've noticed that cameras are alot cheaper over here than at home... that was for the full set up too, complete with 1G memory card, camera bag, body and half decent zoom (can't remember how big it is ). It's my first digital and my first SLR, so I think its brilliant!

hope this helps

Yeah good shot, right in frame. A bit more side on might help the impression of speed.
I'll give you a PM closer to the date, see if you want to meet up for a chat.

A dslr is a must - but don't feel you have to get an expensive one. I got double page spreads in mags using my 300D and kit lens. If you do have a bit of money to play with spend it on the lenses (which you can keep when you upgrade). The bodies are always getting cheaper and better - and lose their value quickly.

Above all - practise. A lot of the photographers here will be able to take a good picture with pretty much anything - because they know the basics of which shutter speed and aperture to use and what makes a good composition etc. Also, post your pictures here and you'll get lots of helpful tips.
