Automatic invites 2013

Still a loooong way to go decide all the championships and trophies, but we do have some takers already. ALMS, ELMS (P2), PLM, Green X Challenge winners as well as WEC participants will follow, but here are invites from LM24 and ELMS GTE-AM already:

--------------------------
As of August 11th 2012:

LMP1

Audi Sport Team Joest *

LMP2

Starworks Motorsport *

LMGTE-PRO

AF Corse *

LMGTE-AM

AF Corse **
Larbre Competition *
IMSA Performance Matmut **

UNC

Green GT *******

* LM24 invite
** ELMS invite
*** ALMS invite
**** PLM invite
***** Green X invite
****** WEC participation
******* 56th entry
-----------------------------

Note 1:
(As of now) No automatic entry for ELMS LMGTE-PRO winner (not participating the entire season)
Note 2: (As of now) No automatic entry for ELMS LMPC winner (not participating the entire season)
Note 3: ELMS runners IMSA and AF Corse have already quaranteed invites by participating Petit Le Mans 2012, whether or not they finish the race doesn't matter. I guess they now just have to qualify for the race which won't be a problem

The trip to the States does kind of mucky things up a bit when it comes to the invites. I know they get travel costs but I don't think teams should be held to ransom in attending a race thousands of miles away from their target.

Wasn't there also the ELMS stipulation that auto-invites would only come into effect if recipients continued in the series for '13? Not sure what the crack is with that? Always thought that was a messed up rule.

ELMS probably doesn't exist next year so it's not like it matters anyway... even if ACO keeps saying the same BS about the future of the series, ie "we are working hard to be a training ground for prestigious FIA WEC blah blah" they probably realize this too

I'm not sure what's the problem with PLM is, the financially aided trip to US probably doesn't cost that much more than detours to Brno and Portimao (and Zolder which was in the original budget plan for the teams). Okay RA is hardly the market area for these teams and sponsors but I don't see how ten-car grid and empty grandstands of Portimao in November (powered by delayed Motors TV highlights) are so much better, especially when you can get extra auto invites from PLM - on top of your championship invites

Do we know what manufacturers have indicated they will attend yet?

At this stage it looks as the manufacturer involvment will be more or less the same one as this year, except Mazda will bring diesel engines to LMP2 and Viper in all probability gets two entries for GTE-PRO - seeing as the 8L waiver was granted by ACO itself and every self respecting GT manufacturer wants to be part of LM if they are offered a chance

As for automatic invites, they're only crucial for non-factory teams and for those who have no WEC entry and/or loads of extra cash lying around. Ie most of GTE privateers

I notice the four class winners from this years race are all invited back, but I'm not sure why AF Corse and IMSA have been invited back already.

I was talking about the 2013 wec. I assume every participant will have an auto invite to le mans because now the lm24 is part of the wec. So everyone who enters the wec next year will probably have an auto invite to the 2013 lm24. This year I think all 30 entries were invited to le mans, and probably the same will happen next year.

All 2013 WEC entries will be invited to Le Mans (expect a limit to full season WEC cars of 35-40)

3 2012 ALMS entries to be selected by the ALMS (no qualification criteria, so in theory they could give it to a GTC team who wanted to step up to GTE)

Picket just said on RLM , that he reckons MMPR will get an invite for 2013 , and he will seriously look at it ..... with a smile on his face .

Didn't they get an invite this year? I'd have thought they'd definitely have gone to this year's Le Mans if they did?

Looks like they did, but perhaps the team thought that they wouldn't know the car enough in time for Le Mans. Plus the team got (slightly) renamed over the winter.

Both American P1 teams got invites. At least Pickett didn't waste the ACO's time. He was at the race this year and clearly buzzing about the prospect of coming back.

With all their various glitches this year maybe it was a smart decision. Would love to see them make the trip next year.

John Dagys did indicate there would likely be a larger US presence at the race for '13.

Looks like we have four more auto invites courtesy of the Michelin Green X Challenge.

http://www.endurance-info.com/versio...nce-14428.html

WEC:
#2 Audi Sport Team Joest
#71 AF Corse 458

ALMS
Muscle Milk Pickett Racing
#3 Corvette Racing

You have to wonder how that impacts on the 3 'at large' ALMS invites handed out by the ALMS. Why hand out invites to teams who already have them?

I'd imagine this guarantees Level 5 an invite. They can hardly turn down the GT class winners in the #4 Corvette. A few question marks surround Conquest and RLL so I'd ask Dyson if they actually intend to use it and give it to them if so.

IMO ALMS teams should be asked to apply for one of the 3 auto invites and there should be a penalty if they get one and dont take it up.

It would certainly put a stop to time wasters. I suppose you also have the issue of teams getting handed invites now and maybe not having everything ironed out for '13.

Not sure what will happen beyond '13 but if the WEC continues to grow gradually the invites would become all-important. Right now I'm pretty sure any runner from the ALMS could enter the race and get in next season regardless of an auto-entry. But P2 is becoming a squeeze.

Here are the 13 confirmed auto-invites then:

Michelin Green X auto entries don't extend to the ALMS sorry for the earlier posts. Was duped by a seemingly erroneous E-I article.

I like this idea. It would allow other quality teams (not necessarily from the ALMS) who ARE seriously considering more time to get the finances lined up as they could be confirmed earlier.
EDIT: So is Muscle Milk not planning to attend? Greg Pickett had said with an invite he would take them up on it in '13? Surely they will get an invite?

Complete change of heart then from Greg Pickett. Listening to him numerous times this year you'd have thought they were nailed on to make the trip.

They are concentrating on defending their P1 title. I'm disappointed by that to be honest. It's hardly a brutal fight in the ALMS P1 class.

Perhaps he is saving his pennies for a full WEC season in 2014 when there no longer is P1 anywhere else?

Yes and he had hoped to be the first Porsche customer prior to the merger announcement! I wonder if that will still happen now and if they would even sell him one the first year seeing as he would have to compete against them in the WEC.
