And how does this help us?
The road from here to Bathurst is dirt for 40km and dangerous.
The hospital made the news because they can't afford new bandages and patients are told to wash out their old ones.
The local council is cutting out the weekend sports because there is no grass on the playing fields because of the drought.
The local water supply is down to 25% and falling.

And a race track that is used twice a year gets money from the Federal Government!
And for what reason?
A better track? No!
A safer track? No!
Better facilities for the paying public? No!

Better Vip boxes? Yes!

10 million so that some corporate wallys can sit on their arses in air conditioned comfort.

Hopefully the planned upgrades will pour more money into the Bathurst economy, they certantly deserve it. their commitment to the nations favourite racetrack is fantastic, and should be applauded.

Come on! Let's not get theatrical about this. The Government has just announced spending of $192 billion, and the $10m they're throwing at Bathurst is the reason why Goulburn Hospital has to recycle bandages???????

Try these other spending programmes for size...
The Government will provide $6 million in 2003-04 to the National Institute of Circus Arts to enable it to expand its existing premises.

The Government will provide a package of assistance totalling $272.5 million over four years from 2003-04 to 2006-07 to contribute to the staging of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games (M2006) to be held from 15-26 March 2006.

The Government will provide $131.6 million for the Australian Defence Force’s contribution to Iraqi stabilisation and reconstruction.

The Government will provide $20.3 million (including $6.7 million in 2003-04) to assist the downsizing of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force.

So did the Bathurst grant really break the Bank???????

I can't understand some people here.
How can you be here as a motor sport fan and at the same time begrudge the upgrading of the best track in Australia?
No, the money will not be all spent on VIP boxes, there will be improved facilities for us mortals. (but just remember it the VIP that put up the cash for the race)
Don't come here complaining about your dirt road or childcare.
What have you done to help yourself?
Go and write a few letters to politicians like I did.
If you want to whinge, moan and complain go and do it on a "dirt road" or "childcare" forum.

And YES, it will be...
A better track.
A safer track.
Better facilities for the paying public.

This is going to turn into a huge ****fight, but here goes.
I am a huge motorsport fan. I also am also a race car driver, so i can see it from both points of view. The thing i see here so far is that the people who have voiced there opinion against this spending are people who actuallly race cars. Funny thing that.
The way i see it is that the council and now both levels of Gov have been railroaded into spending the money by the "black wiggle" and his threats of removing the race if the upgrades were not completed.
This money does not help motorsport in general. If the 10 mil was for the track to be used 10 times a year by club racers right though to V8 soupcars i could see some benefit in it.
Now just imagine if they spent $24 mil doing up Carrington Park (the local bathurst footy ground) just so the NRL could hold the grand final there and no one else could use it for the rest of the year. Now how is that going to help the local juniors or the rest of rugby league in NSW????????? I dont see any difference to the money being wasted up at Mt Panorama.

Just a small correction here.. it is STANDARD practice to reuse crepe outer bandages, where the patient is the only user (eg at home). This particular item was pure political grandstanding (excuse the Bathurst pun) that has no medical justification.

Well I think it's great.
If you go back & read all the posts by people here, the majority b****ed that the Gov't would not put up the money.
So here it is!
They've done it, so why complain about it.
Hey don't get me wrong, I have kids also but, this forum is about Motor Racing & my issues with health, education etc etc have nothing to do with this forum.
Now we just sit back & watch the progress.
It has been a long time in coming so lets enjoy.

From Bathurst Council's own website...

The construction of the new, multi-purpose Pit Paddock complex is aimed at securing the future of motor racing on the Mount. It is stage one in a long-term plan to redevelop the whole Mount Panorama area. Initial work addresses the changing needs of drivers and teams, as well as changing safety regulations that govern motorsport.

Some of the improvements are listed below:
- 15m x 8m garages fronting onto Pit Lane, with access at rear for transporters to unload cars directly into the garage.
- improved level/grade in Pit Paddock area, to better manage surface water flow and vehicle movements
- improved spectator mounds around track
- new corporate suites, administration and media facilities

Sure the corporates get a good deal but the way I see it the rest of us (and competitors like mtpanorama) will also benefit...

I am pretty shocked at the negative comments being made... it has been documented elsewhere what the extra $10 million will fund. I am 100% grateful that the Feds have tipped in as well.

Hello Lou and welcome to the forum.

Who is we exactly, apparently your not just an average punter like most of us here. If you're part of a lobby group/campaign would you mind letting us know who you are and what is your agenda. Hey, you might find some keen supporters amongst us.

Morrie, has brought up the issue of tax payer's money being spent on non-essentials. That's a very valid point, but if they're going to spend 300 million on a football stadium, I'm happy for motor racing to get at least 10 million.

Mt's issue, and it's a good one, is simply, how does putting all 10 million into a track that's used twice a year by the top end of the spotrt, help everyone else? Unless state/club level motorsport, gets a reasonable oppurtunity to use THE ENTIRE facility a couple of times a year, what is there for us to celebrate?

Yes there are lots of things the government COULD spend money on, but you can't please all the people, etc, etc.
In the overall scheme of things, $10m in a budget the size of Australia's is a drop in the ocean. It would be naive to think that if the money had not been allocated to the track upgrade it would have gone to the Goulburn Hospital Bandage Fund or to truck in water to irrigate the Bathurst footy oval.
Don't get me wrong - I work in the medical field, so I know too well about the need. What I find more frustrating is how the health dollars are (mis)spent AFTER it's been allocated (but that's another issue - not for here).
I for one would much rather that $10m go towards the renovations at Bathurst than the politicians pension/super entitlements or payrises!

Why does the track HAVE to be used by clubs etc to benefit them?

Exposure to motorsport is what the $10 million will buy...
