Future of the Inline 6?
On the one hand it's a long engine, not suited to front drive, transverse cars. On the other for improved emissions and economy turbo modular inline sixes are replacing V8s in some cars (BMW), and these engines can be made into inline 4s and 3s!. So will the inline six stay in trucks, or make a comeback with cars?

What's wrong with a V6 or a V4 ? also the same tooling at the push of a few buttons and a shorter and lower frontal area.

As an E46 owner, I love my straight 6. I do however, think that small capacity vees are going to be the mainstay of the industry for a while to come.

I love straight sixes but theyre dead. Theyre not compact enough for modern cars when you can get the same performance out of a V6 or a turbo I-4 and have something much more compact.

Whereas the modern oversquare high revving high temp-lean burn lumps are noisier, particularly with ally blocks. Same as Ginger, I very much enjoy my Beema six. The Volvo V70 FWD works rather well: five pot and the lump sideways. |

Having driven straight sixes since the 1970s, I say long may they continue. I have had them in Toyotas, Mercs, Jags, Vauxhalls and Volvos, and apart from being somewhat thirsty when being driven hard, they are the bee's knees. And being under stressed, they can (like me usually) go on and on and on..........

Yup, straight sixes (and V12s, since it's literally a double-straight six) used to be superior in terms of balance and smoothness, but that's not the case anymore. There are ways to make l4s and V6s run smoothly.
