Graeme Crosby is someone who downplays his car racing career too, it barely rates a mention in his autobiography despite him taking to it like a duck to water, made the Bathurst Top 10 at his first attempt amongst other things

Gardner probably said that after Lowndes punted Gardner off in a straightline at the Bathurst ATCC round in 1996. Gardner and plenty of others (even HRT from memory) were very critical of Lowndes driving there, he obviously learned from it. (Johnson criticised Lowndes driving at Sandown a round earlier as well)

Lowndes obviously took the criticism on board and learnt from it

The divorce happened after the bike career was over, and they are still friendly (Donna wrote the forward for Wayne's book)

The travelled the world together as Gardner chased success, and they achieved it together. I'd call that a love story.

As a movie - it sounds like a turkey though?

Graham Cosby did some commentating at one stage and was damned good at it, way better than what passes for a commentator today. As for WG's car career, he raced here then raced for about six years in Japan and was highly popular there.

I went to the NZ premiere of this last night in Auckland. It was fantastic, lots and lots of behind the scenes footage, interviews with the people who were there up to their knees in it and actually knew what happened, the story was almost equally told between Wayne and Donna, with comments from Rainey, Swartz, Lawson, Mamora Moriwaki, Jeremy Burgess, all the people from his very early days in Europe, everyone. At the end was a Q&A with the man himself, and Graeme Crosby was there too, all MC'd by Mike Pero. Best few hours of your life you could ever hope to spend. Absolutely superb.

Edit - absolutely no mention of car racing, it was totally bike related, which was fine as the car racing is another story in itself.

I had dealings with an ex HRC personality (factory Japan Team) for a while a few years ago and his thoughts on Doohan were less than flattering, way way less and he was a man who knows Doohan and Gardner extremely well. I can't recall discussing WG too much but the description of his personality from people who know him sounds like a lot of other very competitive people I have met. They are nearly all self centred to some extent because in a way they have to be and their emotions before and after competing are on a roller coaster. I saw Peter Janson threaten a fellow competitor with all sorts of stuff one night during a rally which on reflection was more funny than anything else.
