How did Shumi miss Button?
How did Michael Shumacher not smash into Button when Button hit the wall?
I mean we've all seen car after car go through that chicanne at a speed that causes them to come right up to within a few feet of that wall. Schumi was right on Button's arse but somehow managed to bring the car down to speed enough to miss him by 3-4 car widths. Just think what a disaster that could have been! Thank God and unworldly F1 brakes it didn't happen or it could have been just a horrible accident. |

He was far enough behind to see that Jense was having a moment.
You do bring up a good point. Perhaps we should ban tailgating in F1. |

moreover, it was lucky that Button didn't bounce back into the track, he almost stayed fixed into the wall...

It wasn't a heavy impact though - the suspension absorbed most of it, making ti easy for Jenson to stay out of the way. Even if Michael had hit the car, the only real damage would've been to take Michael out - it was at low speed and the contact wouldn't've been against the damaged parts of Jenson's car.

well jenson did ride the kerb- and schumi had a great view of the action as he was entering the chicane. a feather of the breaks turn in late and track out in front of jens
it is schumacher after all, and his luck is returning it seems |

Jenson also hit the wall a few meters "closer" to where the nornally come close the wall due to him driving over the kerbs and loosing control. Plus I think MS would have quite easily have spotted Buttons mistake and taken the required action to miss him.

Yeah, it was pretty obvious from the moment he hit the kerb that hard...

He still had a pretty wild slide through the chicane, so even though he could see it, he had to do a little work to avoid the car.

I don't think there was any real danger of Michael hitting Jenson's car, because he came into the corner so long after the impact had happened, adn Jenson did a good job of keeping the car off the racing line. Even if the gap had been half what it was I suspect Michael's quick reactions would have carried him clear, and the other possibility is that they would ahve made relatively light contact, causing Michael to need a front wing change at the pitstop - perhaps costing him another 10-15 seconds in the line.

lol - dirty air is probably what's being said by the drivers on the radios - particularly by certain held-up Renault drivers! hehe

I suspect a few naughty words were spoken on BAR airspace! but MS was well in control.

Well, TGF has personal experience with the "Wall of Champions" (from 1997), so I'm sure he knew immediately what was going on...
