More the fact they were only marketed the GT as a 4 door in Australia, although some 2 doors were privately imported. I think the 4 door GT was local production. The GT500 was a 2 door Homologation special, made locally in limited numbers for Bathurst racing purposes, using GT running gear with some additions and improvements including large twin fuel tanks to counter the Mini Cooper S in endurance races. They are now sold for Lotus money. The Lotus was not used at that time because it was too expensive and did not fit in well with the retail price classes used, although it was also raced here successfully eventually.
