Seeing a photo of BABS in baubles photo parade inspired me to dig out the story of the restoration of this historical gem. Not really a racing video in terms of race footage but as I say a very historically significant car.

OK another one then. That one was 1964, this one is 1966 when it had become the Gallahers 500, and saw the arrival of some overseas Bathurst rookie called Rauno Altonen in a Mini Cooper S, plus others like Paddy Hopkirk (The Minis showed the local cars the way to do it, with the only non Mini in the outright top 10 a Chrysler Valiant in 10th.)

Cars competed in four classes based on the purchase price of the vehicle in Australian dollars.

Class A
The Up to $1,800 class was contested by Datsun 1300, Fiat 850, 1.2 litre Ford Cortina, Morris Mini De Luxe and Morris 850.

Class B
The $1,801 to $2,040 class featured 1.5 litre Ford Cortina, Hillman Minx, Isuzu Bellett, Morris Cooper, Prince Skyline, Renault R8 and Toyota Corona.

Class C
The $2,041 to $2,700 class entry list was dominated by the Morris Cooper S, but also included a Fiat 1500, and a Toyota Crown.

Class D
The $2,701 to $4,000 class featured Chrysler Valiant, Holden HD , Studebaker Lark, Triumph 2000 and Volvo 122S.

Oh yeah, here is the video link.

The Gallagher vid is really great, EB! Did you spot two FIATs, a 128 and 850 may be? The scrutineering team worked seriously after the race! And what about tightening the wheels bolts with a simple crank? When you think about how simple an air gun makes things…

I think maybe a Fiat 1500 and 850. Also you did not mention the Renault R8.

Not a link to a certain vid but one to the channels home page of Richard Chamberlain and his rather mental and awesome Porsche 935 that still races with GT3 full modern cars.

Seeing as the early Bathurst races seem popular here is the 1965 Armstrong 500.....

Just to show the difference back then, the winners (Barry Seton and Midge Bosworth) Cortina GT500 completed the 500 mile race, did post race scrutineering and then got driven another 500 miles back to Melbourne on the road as a Promotional Victory tour!

Barry Seton suffered Polio as a child, but did 22 Bathursts over a long and successful career. When he hung up his helmet he built engines for and entered son Glen Seton in a Capri (Glenn won 2 ATCC titles over the years ). I think it was 1983 Bo and Glenn shared a car at Bathurst) We saw a Seton at Bathurst every year bar one from 1963 to 2008.
Now we have a third generation Seton (Glens son Aaron) looking to be every bit as good as Barry and Glen. Aaron currently runs in Touring Car Masters and assorted other categories. He is one to watch for the future..

I noticed in the comments that the address given in the video for Delage is shown on the engine plate. That address, 140 Ave des Champs Elysees, Paris, is now a McDonalds Restaurant. C'est la vie!

Armstrong 500 link is just fantastic! Thanks. Did you see some changed the wheel and drum together rather than the wheel only? The rescue team taking the Mini away from its rail is dare devil style!
Et sous la vidéo, au milieu des commentaries, il y en a un très émouvant posté par un ancien participant, Lindsay Little. Well done again, EB.
Et cette fois, on ne peut pas manquer la foutue Renault 8! She's only rock n'roll, ya no!

One for bauble!

1958 Melbourne Grand Prix at Albert Park.

Drivers included Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Bib Stillwell, Doug Whiteford, Alec Mildren, Arnold Glass, Stan Jones, Len Lukey and many more.

For the technical amongst you, Stirling’s car was fitted with an Alf Francis built Coventry Climax FPF, 4 cylinder DOHC, 2 valve, Weber carbed engine of 2051cc, it was a ‘screamer’ with trick cams and crank. Jack’s T45 toted a 2.2 litre FPF, revised ‘Ersa’ 5 speed ‘box and double wishbone rear suspension.

Note: although the track is to all intents and purposes very similar to the track currently used for the modern Australian GP, back in the day they ran anti-clockwise, opposite to the current.

This 1958 Albert Park race was the last race meeting until the modern Albert Park era in 1996

Really interesting assortment of cars! Curious mix of Formula 1, sports cars, and "Specials". Third place for Whiteford on a Maserati 300S. I would not have expected a Maserati 300S to beat their 250F siblings on that sort of race.

Of course it was not an official championship GP, other than it was a round of the Australian Drivers Championship.

It was for an event for Formula Libre Racing Cars and Sports Cars by invitation. Hence the assortment. The race was also referred to as the Melbourne 100 (it was 100 miles long)

Someone made mention of a PA Cresta in the LMC thread, so I thought I would post this newsreel brief clip showing French cars for Gerard, and a Vauxhall PA(for Bauble) at the 1960 Armstrong 500 miler at Phillip Island (The race that moved to Bathurst and is now the Bathurst 1000Klm). The Vauxhall won the race..... and still appears at Historic meetings in Victoria.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fOwhtn3FBY

This is footage of other later Armstrong 500's along with a bit of a focus on the Cresta.

Merci beaucoup, c'est très délicat de ta part! Because we're out of "his" range, 'f course I see a 4 CV Renault but isn't it a Gogomobil after the VW's and 403 Pug?

Here is the entry list.... no Gogomobils entered but I think the car you are referring to might be a Lloyd Alexander of which 4 were entered. (Manufactured by Borgward)

Entry list for 1960: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Armstrong_500

A pic of the Lloyd Alexander, complete with suicide doors.

or maybe the little NSU Prinz, as driven in this race by Aus GP Legends Lex Davison and Doug Whiteford. Love the rear wheel and tyre lean in this pic, plus front wheel in the air like a Cortina!

As you suggest, more likely a Prinz for sure! As a Cortina driver yourself you must remember that this kind of very positive camber at rear means something's going wrong with a halfshaft!
My thought about Goggomobil was because the Dart and a small van were built in Sidney if I'm right this time…*Quelle bonne excuse!

1955 Belgian Grand Prix

If you have 30 minutes to spare have a gander at this Shell race review from the old 'long' Spa circuit.
Brilliant track, gorgeous cars and a fabulous 'traditional voice' type commentary.

An incredible film, commissioned by Shell, which covers the 1955 Belgian Grand Prix from practice to podium.

This is a one-of-a-kind look at legends like Fangio, Farina, and Stirling Moss in their prime piloting cars that have become nearly as famous as the men who drove them. And yes, there is sound, so you can hear the roar of Ferraris and the din of Fangio's Silver Arrow.

The race coverage is even better, from pre-race briefings (on the track!) to cars racing down straights and squealing hairpins mere feet from spectators.

Brilliant, thanks! No chicane at Malmedy which was later a round about. I can tell you how much Burnenville was impressive at night… The braves could do Masta flat out.
