Marcus Gronholm - 2002 World Rally Champion!

Congratulations to Marcus Gronholm, two-times World Rally Champion!!

With two rounds to go after NZ he has wrapped up the championship after a very impressive season making Richard Burns look ordinary...

Peugoet team-mate Richard Burns still had a chance going into the Rally NZ but crashed whilst leading comfortably...

Gilles Panizzi can still win the title mathmatically but he would have to win the last three rallies including NZ which I think is unlikey to say the least...!

Haven't seen Leg 2 yet but I have heard it was remarkable for the number of crashes. Our coverage this weekend is inexplicably boring, for some reason. Was Leg 1 really as dull as they made it look on Speedvision?

Oh, congrats to Marcus too, I knew he'd do it! But Burns made a nice charge to the front so it was well worth staying up late for.

TRIVIA: Did you know that Marcus Grönholm is a member of swedish speaking minority of Finland?

Gronholm will still be champ even if he didn't finish the rally since Richard and Colin crashing out earlier. Looks like champaigne for all the Peugeot guys Sunday night.

Doesn't surprise me, as his name is very definitely Swedish.

Congratulations to Grönholm - a very deserved championship after a dominant season!

Shame that Petter went out with a blown engine on the penultimate stage though - he would have finished 2nd in this rally otherwise, due to Rovanperä's hydraulic problem.

Nice coincidence, Marcus's cousin, Sebastian Lindholm, just clinched a Finnish Championship in rallying on Saturday. Silver Lion was car to have in Finland, too!

By the way, DavidStHubbins, exactly where you have learnt to curse in finnish??

Terve! My old flatmate from uni is from Helsinki! He is the lead singer of "Sunday Poet" a new rock band in Helsinki. I have been there too, i love Finland. I seem to attract Finnish people wherever i go... Strange but true. I have also built up an extensive ability to curse in Finnish... Nobody usually knows what i am on about though. Perrrrrrkele!

Well deserved. When will these Finns stop? (hopefully never!)

A great champion.

to add on top of the incidents that had already ocured on leg 2. I dont know if any of you guys heard about it but 2 photographers and another person were injured when a rally car slid around a corner and pinned a couple of photographers between a car that had already had an accident. Two of the photographers were seriously injured and one was not so badly injured. Me and me mates were watching the stage after the incident not knowing it had actually happened and some one near by got a phone call and he yelled out that 2 people were dead and several injured, we were shocked and devestated at what had happened. but we found out that the people didnt die. It was a relief!

Congratulations to Marcus on a 2nd world title, but my heart goes to Burns as he was trying so hard, and to crash while leading is always a bitter pill to swallow.

However, with a years experience with the team under him next year, the battle between Burns and Gronholm should be even greater.
