More details, please
When Fangio's car broke down, and his team mate was pulled into the pits to give his car to Fangio, there were many who condemned the move as being unsportsmanlike. I still remembre the arguments among my friends then. However, it a subsequent race when again, Fangio's car broke down, his team mate came into teh pits, and forcibly pushed Fangio towards his car to take over hte car. This latter move was deemed to be the supreme example of good sportsmanship s it allowed Fangio to win teh championship for Ferrari. OK, may I please appeal to those who have excellent memories to fill in the gaps for me here.
As an aside, I wouldn't compare this with Toad pulling Rubens over, and Rubens explaining afterwards that he had a new two year contract. That was disgusting. Over to you historic guys now!! Valve |

Wow, that kicked it off!
Bibendum has very eloquently said mostly what I would like to say, so thanks! For a straight record... 1. I mention "TGF" only because one tends to find that those that feel F1 now to be a shadow of its former self are the same ones that don't give Schumacher credit for what he has done. To put it another way I fear that they allow one feature of the status quo (MS) to spoil other features of their enjoyment, and I think this is a shame. 2. "Old lady" doesn't mean anyone - it means like Mrs Brady, Old Lady. Archetype. Example of a way of thinking. Nothing wrong with looking back (I do indulge also, and very fondly remember the Mansell/Senna era), plently wrong with failing to balance that with looking here and now. 3. I don't at all think that the world began when I was born. 4. I know that II type a lot about Schumacher, but it is not accurate to say that this is because I am some kind of blind supporter. I do think he is the class driver of his generation, I do believe that only a very special talent could give double world titles to also-ran teams, and obviously I realise that not everyone agrees with me. Thing is, there is a very big contrast between the "average" opinion on this subject on this (and other) BB and the average opinion among Formula 1 insiders (team bosses, other drivers etc) - and it this imbalance which I find so absorbing. 5. I woud very much love to see a more even fight with the equipment - 2000 was a very tight year which was better from this perspective. 6. I am as happy as the next guy when someone else wins, and cheered like crazy all on my own in my living room when Montoya grabbed pole and when DC won. A little, final, irony to leave the thread - Monaco was great for the sport, someone else won. But - DC won because of a superior driver aid (LC), lack of overtaking opportunities and clever pit strategy. So the race that most people liked the best featured all of the "evils" that so many dislike. A thoroughly enjoyable rant/anti-rant that - peace to all, have a good weekend, come on England! |

Monaco, 1956, Collins shared his Ferrari with Fangio and finished 2nd. Collins and Fangio were close on points, when at the Italian GP: "Collins was in a position to win the World Championship but when he came in for a tire check with 15 laps to go he made the remarkable decision to hand over his car to Fangio, thus giving Fangio the chance to win another World title. It was a great sporting gesture." -grandprix.com The car finished second and Fangio won the title. Quote:

I think that was my point too. We were talking about why we WATCH F1, not why we DON'T watch it.

Uh oh -- I can't resist this -- I fear Glen may be in for a near-dorking...
Funny, I've been in this country for years and years and it never occurred to me to make the connection between Dorking-the-town-in-Surrey and the American, er, cognate term. We'll see if the autocensor picks up on this. |

Why we (or at least some people) are still watching F1 ?
They are simply waiting for Godot. |
