ACO will organize a LMP3 like series.
Quote:
A new series will also emerge next year in partnership with Oreca: The Formula Le Mans. This will be a 7-weekend, 14-race series with open prototypes which will be support race for the LMS on their 5 races and have 2 extra race weekends.

The new cars will be a sort of “LMP3” carbon fiber open prototypes intended for junior and gentleman drivers alike.

Not sure but it does sound like that. I would rather see them support VdeV races instead of creating a new spec series.

It seems so. Derived from (open) LMP2 (look LC75) and V8 of 420 hp. http://www.endurance-info.com/article.php?sid=5799

VdeV cars would make such a better support :/

Where does this leave the Radical series?

On DSC they said they'd basically be LMP2 cars but with spec engines and low running costs.

Sorry for digging up this old thread, but it looks like CN-prototypes just got a lot closer to being true LMPs as VdeV will allow carbonfibre chassis from next year on. Norma have already sold 12 of those new cars and with Wolf there's at least one other manufacturer that's going to supply carbonfibre chassis next year.

It just makes too much sense for these CN cars to the basis and/or a class within the IMSA lites series. A cost controlled, proven engine package and multiple chassis for battles and interest. Open cockpit and closed cockpits made by manufacturers that in some cases have LMP2s or LMPCs in the mix which would build relationships for upward mobility into ALMS.

What a great fit for Honda too to support as part of a ladder.

Nevermind, it obviously to good of an idea to work. Never happen.

It won't happen, because "the Don" won't be selling the cars, like he did with the Elan chassis when IMSA Lites started.

It is main reason why he started the new series...to make $$$

IMSA and ALMS only care about lining their pockets.

Problem is that the GT3s are as fast or faster than the CN-prototypes. That would get pretty messy and I am not sure if I would want to be in one of those little tin cans when it gets run over by an SLS, Aston or a similar boat.

VdeV used to be like that, though, before they split fields. GTs were slower, though - mostly older Cup-Porsches.

Didn't they have some old GTS-Rs and C5-Rs there?

Naw, that was Belcar and FFSA-GT. Both non-prototype affairs.

¿The GT3 faster than CN? Not in this galaxy.

Barcelona circuit
2012 VdeV Pole position Extreme Limite ROUSSEL Léo (FRA) DANNIELOU Marc-Antoine (FRA) POIRIER Jean-Claude (FRA) 1:44.441

2011 Montermini / Moncini Ferrari 458 Italia GT Scuderia Villorba Corse (GT2 with biggest restrictors) 1:48.371
RAmos / Kox Lamborghini Gallardo LP600 GT3 GoodSense Racing Team (1st gt3) 1:48.709

And remember, the cars of GTOpen are faster than the Fia/Ratel GT championships

A CN with amateur drivers is faster than a GT3 with pro drivers and that´s the less powerfull kind of CN. With 6 cil engines like the german championship the CN could be much faster, maybe as faster as the best LMPC

Hmm, might have something to do with track conditions, or that Barcelona is a track that really favors the CNs...

Here's another set of times, all from Hockenheim three weeks ago:

Quote:
Plenz, Fabian. PRC-Honda (1st in the 2 Liter Division): 1:41.479

Lauda, Mathias Callaway Corvette GT3: 1.40.943

Lauda's teammate (the decidedly non pro Sven Hannawald) did a 1.42.039 so that's very much in the same ballpark of what the CN-cars did.
The bigger protos with the larger engines were quicker, but they aren't really CNs anyway. As I said there's an LMPC in the big division from time to time, so that's to be expected.

And here are some more times, both from VdeV at Arragon, both from qualifying:

Quote:
Prorace Norma M20FC 1:56.956
Escuela Espanola des Pilotos Mosler MT900R: 1:57.883
These times are close enough together that there would at least be considerable overlap between the GT and CN fields. There is a reason why VdeV began to separate their grids.

The speed difference isn't enough though. I've seen a race with a small sportscar mixing it with a Mosler (close to V de V and GT3 machinery respectively) and they were very evenly matched overall, but very quick on completely different parts of the circuit, for obvious reasons.

Nice idea though, to have them together. I'd personally go for GT4 and CN prototypes. The globe has enough GT3 series already!
