Royale RP6 History?

I'm trying to piece together the history of the Royale RP6 Sports Racing car from 1971. I have chassis number 8 (ex-Arthur Banting from Holland). Any information on any of the cars would be appreciated, particularly evidence of any participation in International races by any RP6! Also needing any info on engines used by any RP6 in period.

Chris, I take it you have 'Nowhere to Hide' - The story of Royale Racing Cars, by Paul Lawrence? It does list all the chassis numbers but unfortunately, not their histories subsequent to first purchase.

Welcome to 10-tenths.

jamesl has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Try speaking with Alan Cornock, the Royale man.
He should be able to pour more light on your car.
He will probably have all the drawings too.

Chris, good to see you here too!
You have probably tried Alan I guess, but doubt if he has a record of results (from past experience), just chassis sale history. Good luck, see you soon.

An RP4 ran at Sebring in 1972 with, I think, a Twin-Cam engine.

Banting drove in 1971 in Dutch national sportscar races (a series with very few cars and no championship) - I haven't come across any international outing, apart from the "Coupes Benelux" at Zandvoort. In 1972, Kim Koopman drove a Royale RP6 in the same series - probably with the same car.

Thanks Frank!

Anyone else know anything about Arthur Banting/Kim Koopman etc? I know the Banting Car ran a bizzare "lay-down" Ford with a downdraught head. The head was last seen in the back of someone's garage near Zandvoort. More info on the Dutch "championship" would be appreciated. Did the Dutch equivalent of Autosport exist at the time, or does anyone have any race programmes/results sheets? I also heard a rumour about a Mazda 12A rotary running in one of these cars, but can't establish the truth of this. The search goes on!

Royales RP6

I’ve spoken Mr. K. Koopman today and he assured me that there were 2 RP6s’ competing during the 1971/1972 season at Zandvoort!
If there are traces of blue and/or yellow paint on the body it’s the Koopman car. The Banting RP6 had a white body. Koopmans car carried an Alfa Romeo 1300 GTA engine (twin spark plugs) with a dry sump arrangement.
Mr. Koopman sold his car to the Dutch Racing School. After a hard life the car was bought by the Dutch Automobile-Museum Autotron. He couldn't remember the chassis number of his car but there's still a small possibility to get hold on the chassis number and some more information about the two cars.

Guus! You are a star! Any further information on either car would be very helpful. If the Koopman car ended up in a museum, is it still there? Do we know what happened to Banting? I heard some rumours, but nothing very concrete....

Thanks Ricardo 1954! My database of RP6 information is beginning to grow. I see that your source is Quatro Rodas and Auto Esports magazines. Will the relevant pages scan and email? Alternatively, does anyone have old copies of these publications that I could buy or borrow to copy myself?

If anyone can shed light on the engine specifications that Ricardo has identified in the Brazilian RP6's, I'd be very interested to know more.

Finally, Jan 3rd 1971, Taruma 100 miles: Jose Carlos Pace.......?

Royales RP6 at Zandvoort

Chris,

Kim Koopman send me the two pictures of both Royales racing behind each other at the Zandvoort circuit (1972 or 1973). As I got no reaction to my last mail I'm in doubt if you are still interested but if you are I would appreciate a reaction.

Chris,

Koopmans car had a 4-speed gearbox. Please mail your adress so I can send you the photos as they are hardcopies. Next Thursday and Friday I'm in the UK, Rotherham near Sheffield (business) so possibly I will post them from there to you.

Ok, all you history buffs! If the Jose Carlos Pace who finished 5th in the 100 mile race at Taruma in Jan 71 is the same Jose Carlos Pace who raced for Brabham in F1 in the early 70's and who won the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1975 in a BT44B (beating my hero Emerson into second place), then surely someone must have a photograph of the RP6 he was driving? If I can track down enough information on this particular car, I might rebuild my RP6 as a Pace replica in tribute to a great racer whose career was tragically cut short by the aircraft accident that claimed his life. All information and clues welcomed....!

Royale RP6

Hi Chris,

I don't if you still own the Royale RP6, but at the Oldtimer Grand Prix in Germany (Nürburgring) last August a Royale RP6 appeared at the start of the Masters Historic Sports car race. The car is owned and driven by German Othmar von Diemar. It has a 1600 cc. engine (probably Ford or Lotus).

Chris and any other Royale fans.

RP6 Chassis number 8 was during 2013, as some of may know, fully rebuilt and upgraded to RP17 spec as raced by Hans Baumhardt in period.

I raced the car twice last year in the HSCC Martini and after responding to a number of queries a HTP was issued late in the summer.

So it's all systems go for 2015, I plan to race it in the revised HSCC Martin at Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Zandvoort and Dijon, I may well be joined by another RP17 as chassis number 1 has recently changed hands and I understand the new owner intends to upgrade it to the same spec as the HB car (currently it has a 1300 Brian Hart BDA) and also race it in the Martini.

Whilst my car is currently down on power (rally spec BDG on carbs) if I sort it to my liking I will invest in the Lucas FI and camshaft upgrade.

Here's to an interesting 2015.

Happy new year to all.

Kevin Cooke

Hello Kevin, it looks fabulous!
Thought it was your Lola at a first glimpse due to colour scheme being the same.

hope to see you next year with the car.
